The official launch of Qatar Foundation’s Qatar Precision Health Institute (QPHI) highlighted the impact of precision health on people’s lives in Qatar. Experts at the event emphasized how precision health is reducing the number of deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases in the country. The institute is building on the groundbreaking work done by Qatar Biobank and Qatar Genome Programme in the field of precision healthcare and aims to make Qatar a regional and global leader in genomic medicine and precision health.

During the panel discussion at the launch event, Dr. Wadha Al Muftah, Senior Director of QPHI’s Qatar Genome Programme, spoke about Qatar’s efforts in sequencing Arab genomes and how the country has become a major player in global precision health projects. The session focused on Qatar’s unique position in precision healthcare and the important role that QPHI will play in genomics and clinical applications. Dr. Fatima Qafoud, Director of QPHI’s Qatar Biobank, discussed the findings from genomic data collected over the years, revealing genetic mutations associated with heart diseases in Qatari citizens.

Dr. Qafoud emphasized the importance of preventive measures grounded in precision medicine to mitigate deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases. She mentioned that regular patient monitoring can help in the early detection and treatment of heart conditions. Dr. Reem Al-Sulaiman, Deputy Chair of Medical Genetics at Hamad Medical Corporation, highlighted the significance of precision health in uncovering genetic mutations linked to cancer. Through personalized preventive programs, early intervention and enhanced healthcare can be extended to those at risk of developing cancer.

The panel also included Dr. Kholoud Al Shafai, staff scientist at Qatar Foundation’s Sidra Medicine, and Dr. Lotfi Chouchane, Professor of Genetic Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar. Discussions during the session focused on the application of precision health in uncovering genetic mutations associated with various diseases and the importance of tailored preventive strategies in improving treatment outcomes and recovery prospects for patients. The event highlighted Qatar’s leading position in precision healthcare and the advancements being made in the field through initiatives like Qatar Precision Health Institute.
