Doha, Qatar – Despite a 2-1 defeat to Zimbabwe in a friendly match held at Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium on Monday, Qatar’s national team coach Julen Lopetegui stated the game was a valuable preparation step for the upcoming FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025. The match, intended as a tune-up for the regional tournament, allowed Lopetegui to assess a wider range of players ahead of more focused training sessions. The defeat, while disappointing, is viewed as a minor setback in the team’s long-term preparations.

The friendly served as an opportunity for Qatar to experiment with its squad, giving playing time to 22 different individuals. Key players, including Akram Afif, Boualem Khoukhi, and Karim Boudiaf, were rested, according to reports from the match. The Arab Cup is scheduled to begin on December 1st, and this friendly was one of the final opportunities for evaluation before the tournament commences.

Qatar Team Prepares for FIFA Arab Cup with International Friendly

Lopetegui emphasized that the primary goal of the match wasn’t necessarily the result, but rather the evaluation of players, particularly those recently added to the national team roster. He explained that integrating new talent and understanding their capabilities within the team’s structure is crucial as they build towards the Arab Cup. This approach allows for a more comprehensive assessment of squad depth.

The coach indicated a preference for limiting international friendlies during this period, prioritizing instead the continuation of training as the Qatar Stars League nears the end of its tenth round. This allows players to maintain match fitness within their club environments while still participating in national team activities.

Squad Depth and AFC Champions League Players

Qatar’s squad will also receive a boost with the return of players currently competing in the AFC Champions League Elite stage for clubs Al Sadd, Al Duhail, and Al Gharafa. These players bring a high level of competitive experience, having faced some of the best teams in Asia. Their reintegration into the national team setup will be a key component of the final preparations.

The national team’s performance in the Qatar Stars League is a significant factor in player selection and overall team form. Lopetegui has been in the coaching role since May, and has been actively observing players’ performances in the domestic league to identify potential contributors to the Arab Cup squad.

The FIFA Arab Cup is a regional tournament that features national teams from across the Arab world. It is seen as an important platform for Qatar to showcase its footballing infrastructure and talent, especially as it continues to develop its national team program. The tournament also provides valuable competitive experience ahead of future international competitions, including potential World Cup qualifying matches.

While Lopetegui acknowledged the disappointment of the loss to Zimbabwe, he remains focused on the bigger picture. He reiterated the team’s ambition to compete strongly in the Arab Cup and make a positive impression on the international stage. The coach’s commitment to detailed planning and player assessment is evident in his approach to the upcoming competitions.

Looking ahead, the team will resume full preparations after the conclusion of the tenth round of the Qatar Stars League. The final squad selection for the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 remains to be seen, and will likely be influenced by player form and fitness in the coming weeks. Monitoring the performance of players returning from AFC Champions League duty will also be crucial as Lopetegui finalizes his plans for the tournament.
