MareCet Research Organisation dedicated to marine conservation and the soundscapes of the sea, listen carefully to the secrets shared by the ocean. With Malaysia being one of the richest countries in terms of biodiversity, the waters of the country are rich with over 2,000 species of marine life that the scientists at MareCet aim to protect. Established as a non-profit organisation, MareCet focuses on the research and conservation of marine mammals, guided by an unwavering dedication to safeguarding the marine environment.

The scientific officer of MareCet, Dr Vivian Kuit, believes that studying marine mammals can provide valuable insights into the health of coastal ecosystems. By listening to the sounds of the ocean, they are able to uncover important information about the impact of underwater noise on marine mammals. Using underwater microphones, known as hydrophones, bioacoustics officer Dr Saliza collects data to better understand how noise pollution affects marine life. Based on their findings, MareCet develops mitigation plans such as managing boat traffic to reduce disturbances to marine mammals.

In addition to studying the effects of underwater noise, MareCet is also exploring sound-based solutions to address the issue of marine mammal bycatch. By implementing trials using pingers in fishing nets, the team aims to deter marine mammals from getting entangled in fishing gear. The pingers act as auditory deterrents, emitting sound signals that drive marine mammals away from fishing nets, ultimately helping to prevent accidental harm to marine life.

Equipped with the necessary tools and expertise, the team at MareCet is committed to expanding their research and conservation efforts to protect marine mammals across Malaysia. By tuning in to the soundscapes of the ocean, they hope to develop effective mitigation programmes that will not only save marine mammals but also contribute to the overall health and sustainability of marine ecosystems. Through their dedication and research, MareCet aims to make a positive impact on marine conservation and promote the importance of safeguarding the biodiversity of Malaysia’s waters.

In conclusion, MareCet Research Organisation is dedicated to the research and conservation of marine mammals in Malaysia. By listening to the sounds of the ocean and studying the impact of underwater noise on marine life, the team at MareCet aims to develop effective mitigation strategies to protect marine mammals from threats such as bycatch. Through their ongoing research and conservation efforts, MareCet hopes to expand their programmes and make a meaningful impact on marine conservation in Malaysia. With a focus on safeguarding the rich biodiversity of Malaysia’s waters, MareCet is committed to working towards a sustainable future for marine ecosystems.
