European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently visited Rome to meet with Italian political leaders as the electoral campaign for the June European elections picks up steam. During her visit, von der Leyen addressed questions about the possibility of forming a coalition with the European Conservatives and Reformists Party (ECR Party), stating that she is willing to work with those committed to the rule of law. The ECR Party’s co-president in Italy is Giorgia Meloni, leader of the right-wing Brothers of Italy party, while von der Leyen’s EPP Party’s partner in Italy is Forza Italia, a centre-right populist party founded by Silvio Berlusconi. Meloni has expressed her ambitions to create a majority in Europe that brings together centre-right forces and opposes the left.

In a recent interview on Italian TV, von der Leyen emphasized the importance of defending Ukraine against Russia’s aggression to maintain peace in Europe. This stance reflects her commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of ongoing conflict with Russia. During her visit to Rome, von der Leyen also met with Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and Forza Italia leader Antonio Tajani, engaging in discussions about potential political partnerships in the upcoming elections. Von der Leyen’s willingness to work with various parties across the political spectrum demonstrates her diplomatic approach to building alliances and addressing key issues facing the European Union.

Giorgia Meloni of the Brothers of Italy party has been vocal about her goal to replicate her party’s success in Italy on a European scale. She aims to create a majority coalition with centre-right forces to shift the political landscape in Europe and challenge left-wing parties. Von der Leyen’s visit to Rome coincides with these political developments, highlighting the significance of the upcoming European elections and the potential for new alliances to emerge. As the electoral campaign intensifies, von der Leyen’s interactions with Italian leaders shed light on the complex dynamics at play within the European political landscape.

The ECR Party has emerged as a key player in the European political arena, with potential for influence in shaping future policy decisions. Von der Leyen’s openness to working with the ECR Party signals a willingness to collaborate with diverse political factions to address common goals. The EPP Party’s partnership with Forza Italia in Italy further underscores the importance of forging strategic alliances to navigate the complexities of European politics. By engaging in dialogue with leaders across the political spectrum, von der Leyen is demonstrating her commitment to fostering cooperation and unity within the EU.

Overall, von der Leyen’s visit to Rome highlights the pivotal role of Italy in the upcoming European elections and the broader political landscape of the EU. Her discussions with Italian leaders and engagement with diverse political parties reflect a nuanced approach to diplomacy and coalition-building. As the electoral campaign progresses, von der Leyen’s interactions in Italy serve as a microcosm of the larger political dynamics shaping the future of Europe. By emphasizing the need to defend Ukraine and advocating for peace in the region, von der Leyen is positioning herself as a key player in addressing pressing international challenges.
