Russia recently experienced an unprecedented attack on its territory, with Ukraine claiming control of about 1,000 square kilometers in the Kursk region. The Ukrainian forces, led by Army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, have conducted an offensive operation that has embarrassed the Kremlin. According to Syrskyi, the troops continue to fulfill their tasks, with fighting ongoing along the entire front line. The situation is said to be under control, with Ukrainian mobile groups advancing deep into Russian territory, controlling several settlements and causing civilian casualties.

Governor Alexei Smirnov confirmed the advances made by Ukrainian forces, stating that they now control 28 settlements with a population of around 2,000 people. He reported civilian casualties and evacuations due to the fighting. Meanwhile, the governor of the Belgorod region announced the evacuation of people from a district near the Ukrainian border as Moscow forces scrambled to respond to the surprise attack. Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested that Ukraine’s incursion was an attempt to gain leverage in peace talks and declared that Moscow’s army would prevail in the ongoing conflict.

The Ukrainian operation, shrouded in secrecy, caught the Kremlin off guard and countered Russia’s efforts to breach Ukrainian defenses in the Donbas region. Putin accused Ukraine of trying to destabilize the situation in the border zone and the domestic political landscape in Russia. Despite this, Zelenskyy praised Ukrainian soldiers for their actions in the Kursk region, vowing to eliminate Russian terrorists. The conflict marks a significant escalation in the hostilities, with Russia facing its largest attack on its soil since World War II.

Zelenskyy stated that Russia had brought war to others, and now it is coming home. The incursion into the Kursk region represents a milestone in the ongoing conflict and is the first time Ukrainian forces have led such an attack. The situation has caused tens of thousands of civilians to flee the affected areas, with casualties reported on both sides. The ongoing fighting highlights the complexities of the conflict and the challenges faced by both Ukrainian and Russian forces in the region.

Overall, the recent incursion into the Kursk region by Ukrainian forces has disrupted the status quo in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The offensive operation has caught Moscow off guard and shifted the balance of power in the region. As fighting continues, the situation remains volatile, with casualties on both sides and civilians forced to flee the affected areas. The conflict illustrates the complexities and challenges of the ongoing hostilities and the high stakes involved for both Ukraine and Russia.
