Ukraine’s energy grid has been repeatedly targeted in attacks by Russia, forcing the country to rely on taking massive amounts of power from neighbouring countries. The largest thermal power plant in western Ukraine has been severely impacted, with employees salvaging components for use in heating the nearby village. The Russian shelling is targeting production facilities, substations, and the power grid, causing disruptions in energy transfer from west to east. Many high-voltage lines are overloaded, leading to daily power outages for residents. Ukraine has been importing more energy in the past month than it did throughout the previous year due to the ongoing attacks on its energy sources.

As a result of the attacks on energy infrastructure, gas has become increasingly important in Ukraine not just for heat but also as a vital energy source. Citizens are actively exploring new gas deposits and putting gas wells into operation to meet the rising demand. The government is urging authorities and businesses to invest in large gas generators ahead of winter to ensure a stable energy supply. However, without significant investments in new networks, these generators will only offer localized assistance rather than addressing the wider power grid issues.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called for more support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for additional power generation capacities to prevent the country from being plunged into darkness and cold. The upcoming months are critical for Ukraine as it prepares for winter, with Borrell stressing the urgency of mobilizing resources to bolster the Ukrainian Energy Support Fund. The EU member states have expressed their concerns over Hungary’s stance on Ukraine and are committed to providing the necessary support to help Ukraine maintain a stable energy supply amid the ongoing conflict.

The attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector have had a severe impact on the country’s economy, with the destruction of thermal power plants and substations disrupting the overall power system. The goal of these attacks is clear: to cripple Ukraine’s energy sector and economy. Despite the challenges, Ukraine is striving to find alternative solutions to meet its energy needs, including importing power from neighbouring countries and increasing its reliance on gas. The resilience of the Ukrainian people, coupled with international support, will be essential in overcoming the energy crisis and ensuring a sustainable energy supply for the country.

The Ukrainian government’s efforts to encourage the adoption of gas generators and explore new gas deposits demonstrate a commitment to finding solutions to the energy crisis. However, the reliance on imported power and the ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure underscore the vulnerability of Ukraine’s energy sector. International cooperation, particularly from the EU, will be crucial in providing the necessary support to strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience and mitigate the impact of the conflict on the country’s energy supply. By working together, Ukraine and its allies can navigate through these challenging times and build a more stable and sustainable energy future for the country.
