A search is currently underway in the remains of a hotel in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, to recover a missing person from under the rubble. Russian troops attacked the hotel, injuring two journalists while a third remains missing under the debris. The journalists, who are Ukrainian, American, and British, were part of a war coverage team in Ukraine. The wounded journalists suffered from mind-blast trauma, concussion, broken leg, and cut wounds, as a result of an apparent missile strike by Russian forces.

The head of the regional military administration, Vadym Filashkin, confirmed the attack on the Sapphire hotel where the journalists were staying. The hotel, which was hit by an Iskander-M missile strike, had a six-person crew that included foreign journalists aged 38 and 40. The attack not only injured the journalists but also caused damage to a nearby high-rise building. Polish journalist Agnieszka Andruszewska, who was also present during the attack, shared details of her injuries on Facebook. The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the impact on civilians and journalists in the region.

Residents of Kramatorsk described the terrifying experience of the attack, with explosions causing fear and destruction in the area. One resident, Volodymyr, recounted how the blast occurred while he was inside his home, causing a wave of impact that thankfully did not cause any significant damage. Another resident, Svitlana, shared the panic and chaos that ensued after the explosion, with debris scattered and windows blown out in neighboring buildings. The attack in Kramatorsk is part of a series of Russian strikes that have targeted different regions in eastern Ukraine, causing civilian injuries and property damage.

In the Kharkiv region, multiple civilian injuries were reported following Russian attacks in the Chuhuiv area. Houses were struck, resulting in injuries to residents, including a 4-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl. In Kharkiv city, eight people were wounded when a two-story house was set on fire by a Russian attack. Similar incidents of destruction and injuries were reported in Balakliia and the Kupiansk area, highlighting the widespread impact of the ongoing conflict on Ukrainian civilians. The escalation of violence in eastern Ukraine has raised concerns about the safety and security of residents in the region.

The search and rescue efforts in Kramatorsk are ongoing to locate and recover the missing journalist from under the rubble of the destroyed hotel. The Civil Protection Department of Kramatorsk City Council is coordinating the recovery operations while also providing assistance to residents of damaged apartments. The international community has condemned the Russian attacks on Ukraine, calling for an immediate ceasefire and resolution to the conflict through diplomatic means. The injured journalists and civilians are in need of medical attention and support, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The attack on the journalists’ hotel in Kramatorsk underscores the dangers faced by journalists and civilians in conflict zones. The targeting of media personnel and civilian areas violates international law and humanitarian principles, leading to loss of life and destruction of property. The ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with civilians bearing the brunt of violence and insecurity. The international community must take a stand against such attacks and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict to ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected in the region.
