Three people were killed and multiple fires were reported across the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv. Russia launched several ballistic and cruise missiles on Monday, causing explosions that were felt and heard throughout the city. At least three people were killed in the attack, with the exact number of injuries still being assessed. The Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, one of Russia’s most advanced weapons, were used in the attack, with eyewitnesses reporting buildings shaking from the blasts. Debris from intercepted missiles led to fires in several districts of Kyiv.

The head of Ukraine’s presidential office reported that many people were on the streets at the time of the attack, with ambulances rushing to the Solomianskyi district where a children’s medical facility was hit by a missile barrage. Ukrainian officials urged residents to take shelter and not ignore air raid alarms as the city’s air defence forces were put on high alert. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Moscow targeted at least five cities with over 40 missiles on Monday, resulting in casualties in the central city of Kryvyi Ryh.

The attack came on the eve of a crucial three-day NATO summit in Washington, where allies will discuss and formulate a support strategy for Ukraine in the face of escalating conflict. This attack on Kyiv marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with the Ukrainian capital coming under direct assault. The consequences of this attack are still being assessed as authorities work to contain the fires and provide aid to those affected by the missile strikes.

The use of the Kinzhal hypersonic missiles in the attack on Kyiv demonstrates Russia’s willingness to deploy advanced weaponry in its military operations. The speed and destructive power of these missiles make them difficult to intercept, posing a significant threat to populated areas like Kyiv. The attack has raised concerns about the escalation of violence in the region and the potential for further casualties as the conflict continues to intensify.

Ukrainian officials have called for international support and solidarity in the face of Russian aggression, with President Zelenskyy urging NATO allies to stand by Ukraine in its time of need. The NATO summit in Washington will provide an opportunity for allies to coordinate their response to the situation in Ukraine and demonstrate their commitment to the country’s security and sovereignty. The attack on Kyiv serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to prevent further loss of life in the region.

As the people of Kyiv and Ukraine as a whole grapple with the aftermath of this devastating attack, the international community must stand in solidarity with them and condemn the use of violence and aggression to achieve political goals. The brazen assault on Kyiv underscores the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and a commitment to upholding the principles of international law and human rights. The coming days will be crucial in determining the future course of the conflict and the extent of the damage caused by this latest act of aggression.
