A tragic incident occurred in a western town in Montenegro, where a gunman shot and killed 12 people, including two children, before taking his own life. The government is now considering a total ban on weapons in the country following this devastating event. Local officials described the shooting as one of the biggest tragedies in Montenegro’s history, as it claimed the lives of seven men, three women, and two children who were born in 2011 and 2016. The shooter, identified as Aco Martinović, targeted his closest friends and relatives during the shooting spree.

The shooting took place in the central city of Cetinje following a bar brawl, and at least four others were wounded in the incident. Martinović fled after the rampage but was later located and surrounded by police. He ultimately died by suicide. The town of Cetinje, with a population of around 17,000 people, was left stunned by the tragedy. Residents who knew the attacker personally expressed shock and disbelief at his actions. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the shooting. The government has declared three days of national mourning and cancelled all New Year’s festivities in the wake of the tragedy.

Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatović, expressed profound sadness over the loss of innocent lives and the unexpected turn of events during what should have been a time of holiday joy. The country is reeling from the senseless violence that has once again struck their community. Martinović had a history of violent behavior and previous convictions for illegal weapons possession. The incident has reignited discussions about gun ownership and regulations in the country. This shooting marks the second such tragedy in Cetinje in the past three years, with a similar incident occurring in the historic capital of Montenegro in August 2022, where 10 people were killed.

The government is faced with the challenge of reevaluating their gun laws and policies in light of this horrific event. There is a growing call for stricter regulations and background checks for individuals seeking to own firearms in Montenegro. The Prime Minister has indicated that a total ban on weapons may be necessary to prevent future tragedies and protect the safety of the population. The shooting spree in Cetinje has left a lasting impact on the community, prompting a period of mourning and reflection on how to prevent such senseless acts of violence from reoccurring.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, authorities are working to piece together the sequence of events that led to the tragedy in Cetinje. The attacker’s motives and actions leading up to the shooting are under scrutiny, with the hope of gaining a better understanding of what prompted such a violent outburst. The country as a whole is grappling with the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident and seeking ways to heal and move forward. The memory of the victims, including the two young children who lost their lives, will forever be etched in the minds of the Montenegrin people as they mourn the loss of their loved ones.
