Polish farmers have taken to the streets of Warsaw to protest against European policies affecting the farming sector on the eve of the inauguration gala for the Polish Presidency of the EU. The protesters marched under the slogan “5 x STOP” to draw attention to five key areas they believe are negatively impacting Poland due to policies introduced by Brussels. These areas include the Mercosur trade deal, the European Green Deal, the import of agricultural products from Ukraine, the destruction of Polish forestry and fishing sectors, and problems in the Polish economy. This protest is part of a series of demonstrations held by farmers across Europe since December 2023, with French and Spanish farmers also expressing their discontent with the Mercosur trade agreement.

The Polish government has officially opposed the Mercosur deal, echoing sentiments expressed by other European countries like France and Germany. Polish farmers are particularly concerned about the import of agricultural products from Ukraine, which they believe puts local producers at a disadvantage. The protesters have used various tactics to make their voices heard, including blocking roads and highways, picketing outside government buildings, and even carrying out a one-day blockade of a border crossing with Ukraine in November. These actions have caused disruptions to traffic and trade in Poland in the past few weeks.

Friday’s protest in Warsaw culminated in front of the National Theatre, where the Polish presidency’s opening gala was set to take place. The demonstrators hope to draw attention to their grievances and push for changes to EU policies that they believe are harming the farming sector in Poland and across Europe. The protest comes at a crucial time as Poland assumes the presidency of the Council of the European Union, with farmers demanding a reversal of policies that they believe are detrimental to their livelihoods.

The farmers’ protest in Warsaw is just one example of the growing dissatisfaction among agricultural workers in Europe. Farmers in France and Spain have also been vocal in their opposition to the Mercosur trade agreement, citing concerns about its impact on European livestock and farming practices. The protests in Poland highlight the unified front that farmers across the continent are taking in order to push back against what they see as harmful policies that prioritize international trade at the expense of local producers.

As the protests continue and gain momentum, it remains to be seen how the Polish government and the European Union will respond to the farmers’ demands. With the Polish presidency of the EU just beginning, the farmers are using this opportunity to bring attention to their cause and pressure policymakers to reconsider policies that they believe are detrimental to the agriculture sector. The coming days and weeks will likely see further demonstrations and actions taken by farmers across Europe as they seek to protect their livelihoods and the future of farming in the region.
