The EU is in need of a bold and courageous social agenda to revitalize the Green Deal, according to Nicolas Schmit. As the lead candidate of the Socialists and Democrats in the European elections, Schmit outlined his views on revising the Migration Pact and the importance of opposing the far-right. With his experience in the Jobs and Social Rights portfolio, Schmit believes that there is still more work to be done in putting social issues at the forefront of the European Commission. He sees the current period as a time of great uncertainty for EU citizens, with the rise of the extreme right fueled by fear and instability.

Schmit acknowledges the challenges faced by farmers, particularly in the context of the Green Deal. He highlights the need to support farmers through technological advancements like artificial intelligence and reduce bureaucratic hurdles. Schmit emphasizes the importance of ensuring that the Green Deal is fair both economically and socially, addressing the income disparities and production costs faced by farmers. He believes that building confidence in the Green Deal will be crucial in the coming years.

The EU’s Migration Pact, a significant legislative initiative, has deep concerns for Schmit. He questions the effectiveness of bilateral agreements with countries like Tunisia, Egypt, and Mauritania, expressing reluctance towards deals that may not be efficiently utilized. Schmit calls for a revision of the Migration Pact to explore alternative approaches that address the misuse of funds and challenges faced by refugees in countries like Lebanon. With migration being a key issue in the European election campaign, Schmit recognizes the need for a comprehensive and humanitarian approach.

As the European election campaign intensifies, Schmit warns against the resurgent far-right parties seeking to capitalize on issues like migration. He emphasizes the need for the Socialists and Democrats bloc to stand firm against any alliances or deals with the extreme right, highlighting the fundamental differences in their conceptions of Europe. Schmit rejects the idea of compromising with the extreme right for votes, citing their intelligence in demanding concessions that could shape European policy in undesirable ways.

Schmit’s stance on countering the far right aligns with his commitment to social democracy and ensuring a fair and just Europe. He rejects the notion of a so-called “decent” extreme right and emphasizes the need for a clear distinction between different far-right ideologies. Schmit believes that the conservatives of the European People’s Party may be willing to compromise with the extreme right, but he remains steadfast in his refusal to engage in any understanding or arrangement with such factions. His priority is to uphold the values of social democracy and resist any attempts to undermine them.

In conclusion, Nicolas Schmit’s vision for the EU focuses on implementing a bold social agenda, supporting farmers, revising the Migration Pact, and countering the far right. As the lead candidate of the Socialists and Democrats in the European elections, Schmit’s commitment to social democracy and ensuring a fair and just Europe is evident. With the challenges of uncertainty, migration, and the rise of the extreme right, Schmit advocates for a principled approach that prioritizes the well-being of EU citizens and upholds democratic values.
