A Russian airstrike on an apartment block in Ukraine’s second biggest city, Kharkiv, left at least 35 people wounded on Sunday afternoon. The strike, which involved a guided bomb hitting the 10th floor of a multi-story residential building, caused a fire that spread across four stories. Video footage showed rescue crews helping elderly residents who lived in the building. Earlier in the day, two people died in a missile attack on the Ukrainian Black Sea port city of Odesa. The Ukrainian air force reported shooting down 10 of the 14 drones and one of the three missiles launched by Russia overnight.

Oleh Kiper, Odesa’s regional governor, confirmed the deaths of a married couple in the suburbs of Odesa on Saturday night, with another person wounded in the attack. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed to have downed 29 Ukrainian drones overnight over western and southwestern regions, causing no damage. Additionally, one Ukrainian drone was shot down over the western Ryazan region on Sunday morning. While both Ukraine and Russia engage in drone raids on each other’s territory, Ukrainian officials do not usually confirm or deny attacks within Russia’s borders. The renewed drone and missile attacks come as Ukraine seeks Western support to use long-range missiles to strike deep inside Russia.

Ukrainian officials have been pushing for permission to use American-provided weapons in a broader area within Russia’s border with Ukraine, arguing that it is crucial to weaken Russia’s ability to strike Ukraine and push its strike capabilities further from the border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has taken to social media to urge a shift in the West’s policy on the use of long-range weapons in response to Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for air defense, long-range capabilities, and support for Ukrainian warriors to defend lives against Russian aggression.

The escalating violence in Ukraine has sparked calls for stronger Western support to help Ukraine defend against Russian attacks. Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for equipment, weapons, and military aid to counter the Russian offensive in eastern Ukraine. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. Reports of civilian deaths and injuries in missile and drone attacks highlight the devastating impact of the conflict and the urgent need for international intervention to end the bloodshed.

As tensions continue to escalate between Ukraine and Russia, the international community is facing increasing pressure to intervene and broker a ceasefire to prevent further bloodshed. The conflict has already caused widespread destruction and displacement, with millions of Ukrainians forced to flee their homes in search of safety. The targeting of residential buildings and civilian areas in airstrikes and missile attacks has raised concerns about the humanitarian impact of the conflict, with innocent civilians paying the price for the ongoing hostilities. The need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict is more urgent than ever, as the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine continues to worsen.

The recent escalation of violence in eastern Ukraine has drawn condemnation from world leaders and renewed calls for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The targeting of civilian areas and residential buildings in airstrikes and missile attacks has intensified concerns about the humanitarian impact of the conflict. As the death toll continues to rise and the humanitarian crisis deepens, there is a growing urgency for international intervention to end the violence and facilitate a lasting peace in Ukraine. The international community must work together to support Ukraine in its efforts to defend against Russian aggression and ensure the safety and security of its people. Only through concerted diplomatic efforts and a commitment to peace can the conflict in Ukraine be resolved and the suffering of innocent civilians be brought to an end.
