Malawi Vice President Saulos Chilima was laid to rest in his village following a state funeral in Lilongwe, where President Chakwera called for an independent investigation into the plane crash that claimed Chilima’s life and the lives of nine others. The funeral was held at the Bingu Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, where Chakwera and other dignitaries paid their final respects to the late vice president. Chilima and the other victims died in a plane crash in Malawi’s northern region of Mzimba.

During the funeral, President Chakwera called for an independent probe into the crash, stating, “Our tears are about the desire to know what delayed the search for this plane. I would like to assure you, Malawians, that this accident will be investigated by an independent expert.” Despite some boos and jeers from the crowd, Chakwera emphasized the need for answers and unity in the face of tragedy. The plane, which was en route from Lilongwe to Mzuzu, went missing and was later found in a forest plantation south of Mzuzu after an extensive search by hundreds of soldiers, police officers, and forest rangers.

Chakwera stressed the importance of remaining calm and supportive of each other as investigations into the crash continued. He highlighted the need for an independent investigation, stating that the Malawi Defense Force alone cannot conduct a credible inquiry. The military paid tribute to Chilima with a 19-gun salute during his burial, which was attended by various dignitaries and Chilima’s family. The tragic nature of the funeral was further highlighted when four people lost their lives in a vehicle crash at the event.

The death of Vice President Chilima and the others in the plane crash has sent shockwaves through Malawi, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. President Chakwera’s call for unity and patience during this difficult time reflects the nation’s mourning and the need for answers. The tragedy has revealed the need for improved safety measures and protocols in air travel within Malawi to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The state funeral for Vice President Saulos Chilima served as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the impact of tragic events on a nation. Chakwera’s commitment to an independent investigation underscores the government’s dedication to transparency and accountability in the face of adversity. The outpouring of support and tributes at the funeral highlighted the respect and admiration that many Malawians held for Chilima and the importance of honoring his legacy.

As Malawi mourns the loss of Vice President Chilima and the others who perished in the plane crash, the nation stands united in seeking answers and justice. The tragedy has brought to light the need for stronger safety measures in air travel and the importance of thorough investigations into aviation incidents to prevent future tragedies. The legacy of Saulos Chilima will live on in the hearts of the Malawian people, who will continue to remember his contributions to the nation and his dedication to serving his country.
