The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated when Israeli naval forces captured senior Hezbollah operative Imad Amhaz in northern Lebanon. Lebanese military officials confirmed the abduction of a Lebanese citizen in Batroun, north of Beirut. This marks the first time Israel has announced deploying troops deep into northern Lebanon for such an operation. Hezbollah condemned the incident as a “Zionist aggression” and called on Lebanon to file a complaint with the UN Security Council.

The operation came amidst ongoing cross-border fire between Hezbollah and Israel, which intensified following the war in Gaza in October. Hezbollah has been launching strikes on Israel in solidarity with Hamas, causing displacement on both sides of the border. The conflict escalated further on October 1 when Israeli forces launched a ground invasion of southern Lebanon. It is estimated that up to 15,000 IDF soldiers have been deployed to Lebanon.

Lebanese residents recounted how armed individuals claiming to be state security forces broke into an apartment building in Batroun to seize the man believed to be Imad Amhaz. The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, denied allegations that they assisted the Israeli landing forces in the operation. The capture of the senior Hezbollah operative deep in northern Lebanon marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed group.

Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant group, has been engaged in cross-border fire with Israel as part of its alignment with Hamas in Gaza. The conflict has led to the displacement of thousands of people on both sides of the border. The capture of Imad Amhaz in Batroun represents a new phase in the conflict, with Israel deploying troops deep into northern Lebanon for the operation. The incident has raised tensions in the region, prompting calls for action from the Lebanese government.
