A Russian warship fleet arrived in Cuban waters for planned military exercises in the Caribbean, attracting the attention of locals and tourists alike. The flagship, the Russian frigate Gorshkov, along with the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan and two logistic ships, allowed citizens to board and explore. The Russian fleet will be docked in Havana until June 17, participating in exercises simulating missile attacks against various targets.

The presence of Russian military vessels in Cuban waters raised some concerns among US officials, although they downplayed the danger of the visit. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that they would closely monitor the situation, but did not expect any transfer of missiles or technology between Russia and Cuba. Both Russia and Cuba are under US sanctions, impacting the small island nation significantly.

Cuba’s communist regime has a long history of friendly relations with the former Soviet Union and Russia, and the arrival of international ships in the Bay of Havana is not uncommon. In addition to the Russian fleet, a Royal Canadian Navy ship is expected to arrive soon, adding to the diverse multinational presence in the area. Despite the political implications of the visit, the opportunity for Cuban citizens to explore foreign ships is a welcomed experience.

Russian Defence Ministry reported that the military exercises conducted by their fleet aimed at simulating missile attacks against ships and targets up to 600 kilometers away. The strategic location of Cuba, just 150 kilometers from the continental US, adds a level of complexity to the situation. However, the planned exercises are within the framework of routine military activities and do not pose an immediate threat to the region.

The queue of Cuban citizens waiting to board the Russian frigate Gorshkov showcased the curiosity and interest sparked by the foreign arrival. The experience allowed visitors to go through security checks and explore the flagship, although access to the nearby submarine was restricted. Men, women, and children of all ages lined up throughout the day, eager to take part in this unique opportunity to interact with the Russian military presence.

The visit of the Russian warships to Cuban waters serves as a reminder of the complex geopolitical dynamics in the region. Cuba’s strategic significance and historical ties to Russia highlight the ongoing influence of major world powers on the island. While the US closely monitors the situation, the presence of foreign fleets in Cuban waters continues to attract attention and interest from locals and tourists alike. The planned military exercises serve as a demonstration of military capabilities and strategic partnerships, adding a layer of intrigue to the already complex relationship between Cuba, Russia, and the United States.
