The Group of Seven (G7) leaders are addressing migration as a key issue on the second day of their summit. The leaders made a historic deal on the first day to use the profits of frozen Russian assets to secure a loan of €46 billion to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. This move was intended to send a strong signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the industrial democracies stand united in support of Ukraine. The summit also focused on the Middle East, with a call for Hamas to accept a cease-fire deal and for Israel to de-escalate its offensive on Rafah.

On the second day of the summit, discussions will shift to Africa, China, and artificial intelligence (AI). Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa, aimed at addressing the root causes of migration, received backing from G7 leaders on the first day. The inclusion of Pope Francis in the summit marks the first time a Pope has participated, with talks expected to cover topics such as AI, migration, and China. The summit is notable for the presence of guest leaders from countries such as Ukraine and the Global South, highlighting the importance of addressing global issues at the summit.

The opening of the summit was marred by criticism of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for allegedly removing a reference to safe and legal abortions from the final declaration. Meloni’s government defended the decision by stating that the document was still under negotiation. Countries like France and Canada have been advocating for the inclusion of this reference, following a similar deal reached at the G7 summit in Japan last year. Tight security measures, including a red zone with restricted access and over 5,000 police officers, have been put in place at the Borgo Egnazia resort where the summit is taking place.

Overall, the G7 summit is addressing key global issues such as the conflict in Ukraine, migration, and the situation in the Middle East. The agreement to support Ukraine with a loan funded by frozen Russian assets demonstrates the solidarity of G7 leaders against Russian aggression. The focus on Africa, China, and AI on the second day highlights the importance of addressing diverse global challenges. The presence of guest leaders like Pope Francis underlines the significance of the summit in addressing pressing issues on a global scale. Despite controversies over the summit’s declaration, the G7 leaders are united in addressing critical issues facing the world today.
