The European Union has condemned the recent move of North Korean troops being trained in Russia to participate in the war against Ukraine as a violation of international law. According to reports, North Korean soldiers have already been spotted in Russia’s border region of Kursk and are being trained at military training grounds in the country’s east. The troops are provided with supplies and Russian Deputy Defence Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov is reportedly overseeing their training. The number of North Korean troops stationed in Russia is estimated to be around 12,000, including officers and generals.

Ukrainian intelligence believes that the Kremlin is placing high hopes on North Korean reinforcements in the war against Ukraine and is coordinating closely with Pyongyang. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned about the involvement of North Korean troops in the fighting, along with South Korea and the US. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in response to questions about the presence of North Korean soldiers in Russia, stated that what his country does is within the framework of a strategic partnership treaty with North Korea and their business.

The European Union, represented by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, expressed deep alarm at the reports of North Korean soldiers being sent to participate in Russia’s illegal aggression against Ukraine. Borrell emphasized that this would be a violation of international law and the UN Charter, and could have serious consequences for peace and security. The EU strongly condemned the military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow, as well as the arms transfers that violate UN Security Council resolutions. Borrell stated that the EU would coordinate its actions with international partners, including retaliatory measures.

The situation involving North Korean troops being trained in Russia to participate in the war against Ukraine has raised concerns globally, particularly among European leaders. The presence of North Korean soldiers in the conflict zone raises questions about the extent of international involvement in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The EU’s strong condemnation of this move highlights the seriousness of the situation and the need for urgent diplomatic intervention to prevent further escalation of the conflict.

The training of North Korean troops in Russia for deployment in Ukraine is seen as a significant escalation of the conflict. The involvement of Pyongyang soldiers adds a new dimension to the war and raises concerns about the potential consequences for the region. The actions of Russia in facilitating the training and deployment of North Korean troops are viewed as a violation of international norms and have been met with widespread condemnation from the EU and other international partners.

As tensions continue to rise in Ukraine and the involvement of North Korean troops becomes more apparent, there is a growing sense of urgency for diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. The EU’s response to the situation, including its condemnation of the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, underscores the need for a united international response to address the crisis. The deployment of North Korean troops in Ukraine highlights the complex and interconnected nature of global conflicts and the challenges they pose for regional and international security.
