Severe storms in Switzerland and northern Italy have resulted in widespread flooding and landslides, causing at least four deaths. The Italian-speaking Swiss county of Ticino was particularly hard hit, with three bodies recovered following a landslide. Heavy rain pounded the South and West of Switzerland, leading to the evacuation of camping sites and the collapse of bridges. In the Swiss Lavizzara valley, one person is still missing. In the Valais region, the Rhone river burst its banks, flooding a motorway and railway line. Local police reported heavy rain in the side valleys south of the Rhone, and the body of a missing man was found, believed to have been surprised by floodwaters.

In Italy, floods, thunderstorms, and landslides also wreaked havoc in various regions. Firefighters conducted around 80 rescue operations in the northern Piedmont region, evacuating dozens of people. Near Montanaro, two adults and an infant were rescued from their car, which was stranded in rising waters. In the Valle D’Aosta region, several villages were left isolated due to overflowing streams and landslides. The extreme weather conditions in both Switzerland and Italy have caused significant damage and posed serious risks to residents.

In Italy, firefighters conducted numerous rescue operations in the northern Piedmont region, evacuating many individuals. Near Montanaro, a family including an infant was rescued from their vehicle, which had become trapped in rising waters. The Valle D’Aosta region faced isolation due to overflowing streams, storms, and landslides, leaving several villages cut off from the outside world. The widespread destruction and loss of life in both Switzerland and Italy serve as a stark reminder of the destructive power of natural disasters and the importance of prompt response and preparedness efforts.
