The couple, who were both highly respected in their fields of neurobiology and biology, were killed in an apparent drone strike at their home in the Pecherskyi district. Both Zyma and Sokur had dedicated many years of their lives to scientific research, working at the Institute of Biology and Medicine of Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University. Their deaths have sparked outrage and condemnation from Ukrainian authorities, with Education Minister Oksen Lisovyi calling Russia an “absolute evil” that brings death and destruction.

The attack on Kyiv, which occurred on the first day of the new year, also resulted in additional civilian deaths and injuries in other regions of Ukraine. In Kherson, two civilians were killed and six were injured as a result of Russian airstrikes. Further casualties were reported in Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk, with one civilian killed in each region as a result of overnight attacks. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched a total of 72 drones, including Iranian-designed Shahed drones, against Ukraine, with Ukrainian air defense forces successfully shooting down 47 and forcing 24 others to veer off course.
