The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has been plagued by scandals in recent months, leading to the resignation of Maximilian Krah, the party’s lead candidate in the upcoming European elections. Krah faced pressure from other far-right parties in Europe after making controversial statements regarding Nazi paramilitary uniforms. His resignation comes amidst calls for his removal from the party by other allies in the European Parliament.

In a coordinated move, members of the AfD’s allies in the European Parliament’s far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) group announced that they would no longer be allied with the German party due to Krah’s comments. This decision was supported by parties such as France’s Rassemblement National (RN) and Italy’s Lega. The comments made by Krah further strained the party’s relationships with its European allies, leading to divisions within the far-right political landscape.

The AfD has been embroiled in multiple scandals, including the arrest of Krah’s assistant, Jian Guo, on accusations of serving as an “employee of the Chinese secret service.” Krah himself faced scrutiny after allegations of accepting cash from a Moscow-backed influence operation. Additionally, the party sparked controversy after revelations of a secret meeting discussing the forced deportation of foreigners and minority-ethnic German citizens.

The scandals have impacted the AfD’s standing in the polls, with a decline in voter support. While still in second place behind the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the party’s share of the vote has been decreasing. The fallout from these controversies has raised concerns about the party’s future and ability to maintain its position in the political landscape.

The removal of AfD from the ID group is expected to have repercussions on the upcoming European elections, impacting the group’s projected increase in seats. The hard-right Eurosceptic European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group is also expected to see growth, leading to a potential shift in dynamics within the European Parliament. Efforts to bridge the divide between ID and ECR could reshape the political landscape and influence the power dynamics within the European Parliament.

In conclusion, the AfD’s scandals and controversies have exposed internal divisions within the far-right political spectrum in Europe. The fallout from these issues has led to calls for the party’s removal from the ID group and raised questions about its future direction. The upcoming European elections will be crucial in determining the impact of these developments on the party’s standing and influence within the European Parliament.
