World Teachers’ Day (WTD) is celebrated globally on October 5th each year to commemorate Unesco’s 1966 recommendations concerning the rights and responsibilities of teachers. It is a day to express gratitude towards educators of all levels who have profoundly impacted our lives. The day serves as a reminder to thank those individuals who have played a significant role in shaping our personal and professional journey.

The digital age has brought significant changes to the field of education, with the integration of technology and pedagogy. The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has raised questions about the future of teaching and learning. Will we see the emergence of robot teachers that can outperform human educators in various areas? The integration of AI into the classroom raises concerns about the impact on teachers’ roles and responsibilities.

In their book, The Fourth Education Revolution, Sir Anthony Sheldon and Oladimeji Abidoye argue that AI embedded within robotic teachers can tailor assessments to the specific needs of each student and provide information effectively. This could lead to a shift away from age-related year groups, allowing students to progress at their own pace. The debate over the acceptance of AI-led classrooms continues, with differing opinions on the benefits and challenges of this technological advancement.

A global digital wellbeing study conducted in 2024 revealed varying perceptions towards AI-generated teachers among different nations. While some countries expressed optimism about the potential benefits of AI in education, others were more skeptical. The role of human teachers in providing guidance and emotional support to students cannot be overlooked. Teachers serve as experience architects, creating an environment where everyone can thrive and grow holistically.

The future of education will likely involve a combination of AI and human oversight to ensure a balanced approach to learning. Teachers play a crucial role in instilling values and life lessons in students, beyond just imparting knowledge. The guiding principle of ‘kindness/compassion before knowledge’ can serve as a framework for designing AI-assisted classrooms that prioritize the well-being and development of students. Human oversight is essential to maintain a humane approach to education in the digital age.

Dr. Justin Thomas, a chartered psychologist and senior researcher in the Digital Wellbeing Program at the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Culture, emphasizes the importance of finding a balance between AI and human interaction in educational settings. As technology continues to advance, it is crucial to ensure that educators remain at the forefront of guiding and supporting students on their learning journey. Teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of education, bridging the gap between technology and human connection in the classroom.
