As the world celebrates World EV Day, India’s progress in adopting electric vehicles (EVs) is commendable, with an increasing trend towards green mobility solutions evident in government data. The most notable progress has been in the three-wheeler category, where 53.61% of new vehicles purchased in 2024 were electric. The two-wheeler segment is also showing promising signs of EV adoption, with electric vehicles accounting for 4.97% of sales so far this year. However, the adoption of EVs in the four-wheeler segment remains relatively low at 2.14%, with electric buses surpassing electric cars in penetration at 3.20%.

Electric vehicles offer compelling solutions by reducing emissions, improving air quality, and helping India meet its climate goals. They also have lower operating costs compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Goa leads the country in EV penetration, with 14.20% of new vehicles being electric, followed by Tripura and Chandigarh. Delhi has a 10.72% penetration of EVs in total vehicle sales, showcasing its commitment to sustainable urban mobility. On the other hand, Himachal Pradesh reported the lowest EV penetration at 1.09%.

The two-wheeler category dominates the electric vehicle market in India, accounting for approximately 51% of total EV sales this year. As World EV Day highlights global commitment to cleaner mobility solutions, India’s data reflects a promising shift towards electrification across various vehicle segments. With the availability of more EV models and government incentives, the growth of EVs is expected to continue in the coming years, particularly in the two-wheeler and four-wheeler segments.Cities are increasingly recognizing the importance of sustainable public transport solutions, with electric buses playing a key role in reducing emissions and promoting cleaner alternatives in mass transit. Overall, India’s progress in EV adoption is a positive step towards a greener and more sustainable future for the country.
