World Energy Day: UAE Hospitality Raises the Bar on Sustainability as Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina Secures Second Green Key

Dubai, UAE (22nd October 2025): Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina has been awarded the Green Key eco-label for the second consecutive year, reaffirming the hotel’s measurable progress in sustainable operations and its long-term alignment with Dubai’s Net Zero 2050 ambition. Aligned with World Energy Day, the recognition highlights how the property embeds conservation, efficiency, and circular practices across every department, while maintaining the guest experience expected of a leading business and leisure hotel.

Sustainability at Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina is structured as an operating system rather than a campaign. Engineering, culinary, housekeeping, and front-of-house teams work to shared metrics and routines, supported by data and regular reviews. The hotel now recycles up to 80 per cent of its grey water for cooling and irrigation, a move that materially reduces potable water use in a region where scarcity is a strategic concern. In the kitchens and restaurants, the team has deployed ChefEye, a food-waste monitoring platform that tracks buffet, plate, and production waste. On the energy side, conventional water heaters have been replaced with high-efficiency heat pumps, lowering electricity consumption and improving overall system performance without compromising comfort.

Mr Raffi Torikian, General Manager, Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina, commented: “Green hospitality is not a slogan for us; it is the way we run the hotel. Securing Green Key for a second year reflects thousands of everyday choices our colleagues make to reduce impact and enhance comfort. On World Energy Day we want to highlight what guests don’t always see: meticulous monitoring, smart technology, and a culture that places sustainability and service on the same footing.”

The certification speaks directly to the most pressing environmental challenges facing the UAE’s hospitality sector, including water resources, energy demand, waste management, and food waste, amplified by rapid tourism growth. Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina’s approach addresses these issues through continuous improvement. Procurement policies prioritise local sourcing to reduce transport emissions and packaging, while colleague-engagement programmes ensure every team member understands the rationale behind each initiative and contributes to the outcomes. Governance remains central to the effort, with regular audits and transparent reporting to maintain Green Key standards and to advance IHG’s Journey to Tomorrow and Giving for Good initiatives.

Guest feedback has also helped shape the programme. Meeting packages increasingly feature paper-free set-ups and refillable water stations, and public areas encourage mindful consumption through unobtrusive prompts. The cumulative effect of these measures extends beyond environmental benefit to tangible business value, including lower operating costs, higher system efficiency, and reduced maintenance; returns that strengthen resilience while advancing sustainability goals.

Looking ahead, the hotel plans to introduce a demand-controlled ventilation system that automatically adjusts fresh-air flow based on occupancy. This will further reduce energy consumption while maintaining indoor air quality and comfort, and forms part of a broader pipeline of efficiency upgrades the team intends to pilot and scale across the property.

Mr Torikian added: “Conscious hospitality is the future of our industry. Guests and partners expect credible action and clear results. Our role is to make the sustainable choice the easy choice, and to do so consistently, day after day.”
