The article highlights the profound disconnect between public sentiment and political agendas in Europe regarding the commitment to World Refugee Day. Palestinian children in Gaza have been living through wars and displacement for seven decades, with limited access to education and prospects for the future. Despite the efforts of community-led groups and humanitarian organizations, the challenges in Gaza persist, with no prospects for higher education and limited opportunities for the youth.

World Refugee Day, observed on 20 June, prompts global reflection on the plight of refugees and aims to raise awareness on the issue. For Palestinian refugees, displacement has been a longstanding issue dating back over 75 years, with more than 1.7 million Palestinians displaced from their homes in Gaza in just the past 8 months. Despite international resolutions affirming the right of return for Palestinians, these rights have not been upheld, leading to ongoing displacement and limited access to basic human rights for Palestinian refugees.

The blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt has worsened the situation in Gaza, with caregivers struggling to meet the basic needs of their families amidst severe limitations on movement and access to healthcare and education. While European campuses show support for refugees, the political stance of many European governments often silences advocacy for Palestinian refugees, exposing a disconnect between public sentiment and political agendas. Europe’s response to the refugee crisis reflects a paradox of solidarity and silence, raising doubts about the sincerity of their commitment to World Refugee Day.

The article calls for concrete, evidence-based decision-making to address the plight of displaced families and communities, allowing them to return to their homes and live in dignity. When Palestinian children can experience joy and normalcy in their lives, rather than the constant fear of war and displacement, true justice and peace can be achieved. Luigi Achilli, Stephanie Acker, and Caitlin Procter from the European University Institute in Florence highlight the importance of addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza and advocating for the rights of Palestinian refugees on World Refugee Day. The article emphasizes the need for solidarity and concrete actions to support displaced communities and work towards lasting solutions for refugees worldwide.
