As the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to grow in the UAE, the government is taking significant steps to make fast-charging stations more accessible to the public. With an aim to increase the share of EVs to 50% of total vehicles on the roads by 2050, the government is focusing on boosting the adoption of EVs and addressing range anxiety. To achieve this, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Etihad Water and Electricity have launched UAEV – the first EV charging network fully owned by the government.

The UAE has seen a remarkable increase in EV sales, with overall sales hitting 11.3% last year, up from 3.7% in 2022. To cater to the growing number of EVs on the roads, the government plans to install a nationwide network of 100 fast-charging stations across all emirates in the next seven months. These stations will be strategically located at popular public places, including parking spaces near residential areas, to cater to EV owners living in apartments who do not have access to charging infrastructure.

The deployment of fast-charging units at key locations such as shopping centers, highways, and workplaces aims to alleviate range anxiety and make charging more convenient for EV owners. A comprehensive study has been conducted to finalize the locations of these stations, taking into consideration factors like traffic volume, surrounding amenities, and stakeholder collaboration. Additionally, strategic partnerships with companies like Emarat petrol station, ENOC, Aldar Properties, and LuLu Hypermarket will further expand the network of charging stations.

While UAEV does not sell chargers for residential installation, companies can approach UAEV to install charging stations at workplaces if a significant number of employees own EVs. The pricing for charging services will be announced soon by the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and will apply to UAEV and other charge point operators. With access to critical infrastructure, state-of-the-art digital platforms, and a 24X7 call center, UAEV aims to provide reliable and convenient charging solutions to EV owners across the UAE.

The introduction of UAEV marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s efforts to promote sustainable transportation and reduce carbon emissions. By facilitating the transition to electric vehicles through the installation of fast-charging stations at convenient locations, the government is paving the way for a greener and more environmentally-friendly future. With plans to expand the network of charging stations and introduce pricing for charging services, UAEV is set to play a crucial role in supporting the country’s vision for a sustainable and electrified transportation sector.
