Saudi Arabia is solidifying its position as a global leader in renewable energy, particularly in the production of green hydrogen, according to Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, the Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Climate Affairs Envoy. Speaking at the 2025 TOURISE Summit in Riyadh, Al-Jubeir emphasized the Kingdom’s commitment to tangible progress in sustainable energy.
The 2025 TOURISE Summit, themed “Future of Tourism,” is being held from November 11-13 in Riyadh, following the 50th United Nations Tourism General Assembly. The event has brought together global leaders to discuss the intersection of sustainability and tourism.
Saudi Arabia’s Green Hydrogen Ambitions
Al-Jubeir highlighted that Saudi Arabia is on track to become one of the world’s largest exporters of green hydrogen. The country’s national oil company has invested heavily in green hydrogen production, setting an example for other nations to follow. However, the minister noted that despite the Kingdom’s efforts, some countries that had advocated for green hydrogen were not ready to purchase it when it was produced.
“We are a country that likes to act more than it likes to talk,” Al-Jubeir said, emphasizing the importance of practical action over rhetoric. He encouraged other nations to engage with their industries to facilitate the adoption of green hydrogen.
Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Preservation
Al-Jubeir also discussed the concept of “common sense tourism,” which prioritizes environmental preservation and authentic experiences that reflect each destination’s unique identity. He stressed that tourism should be sensitive to the environment and provide visitors with unique experiences that cannot be found elsewhere.
The minister drew on Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage, noting that the country’s Bedouin traditions emphasize living in harmony with nature. “We’re originally Bedouins; we believe that we don’t live on this earth, we live with the earth. So when we protect the earth, the earth protects us,” he said.
Promoting Sustainable Practices
Al-Jubeir’s remarks underscored the importance of adopting sustainable practices in the tourism sector. By preserving the environment and promoting authentic cultural experiences, destinations can differentiate themselves and attract visitors. The minister invited international visitors to explore Saudi Arabia’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and opportunities for partnership.
As the global tourism industry continues to evolve, the discussions at the 2025 TOURISE Summit are expected to shape the future of sustainable tourism. The next steps and decisions from the summit will likely influence the trajectory of green hydrogen production and sustainable tourism practices worldwide.
