Captain Dr Shareef Al Romaithi recently participated in a Mars Analog study conducted by NASA and the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), where he lived in isolated, confined spaces for 45 days. During the study, the Etihad Airways pilot performed simulated Mars walks and maintained contact with the control centre in Houston. The purpose of the study was to understand the impact of isolation on the performance and mental health of crew members.

The crew members had to follow strict schedules and perform various activities while being confined to the isolated environment. Al Romaithi mentioned that he was proud to represent the UAE on an international platform and hoped that his participation in the UAE Analog Programme would motivate Emirati youth. Out of the 18 studies conducted in the programme, 6 were carried out by UAE universities, demonstrating the country’s commitment to space exploration and research.

As the only pilot in the study, Al Romaithi stated that the inclusion of a pilot in the Mars Analog study was a strategic move by MBRSC. He emphasized that the collaboration with NASA not only enhances UAE’s position in terms of cooperation with international space agencies but also creates opportunities to share technologies and resources for further development of the UAE’s space sector. This collaboration opens doors for the UAE to progress in the field of space exploration.

Participation in the Mars Analog study provided Al Romaithi with a unique opportunity to experience what it would be like to live in Mars’ atmosphere. The simulated Mars walks and communication with the control centre in Houston gave him a glimpse into the challenges of living on the red planet. Through this experience, he gained valuable insights into the physical and psychological effects of isolation, which are crucial considerations for future space missions.

The video shared by the Abu Dhabi Media Office showcases the efforts and achievements of Captain Dr Shareef Al Romaithi during his participation in the Mars Analog study. By sharing his experiences and insights, Al Romaithi aims to inspire others, especially Emirati youth, to pursue careers in space exploration and research. His dedication to representing the UAE on a global stage reflects the country’s commitment to advancing in the field of space science.

In conclusion, Captain Dr Shareef Al Romaithi’s involvement in the Mars Analog study highlights the UAE’s efforts to cooperate with international space agencies and advance its position in the space sector. By participating in such studies, the UAE is paving the way for future advancements in space exploration and technology. Al Romaithi’s experience in the isolated environment provides valuable data for understanding the challenges of future space missions, and his willingness to share his knowledge and experiences bodes well for the future of space exploration in the UAE.
