Captain Dr Shareef Al Romaithi recently participated in a Mars Analog study conducted by NASA and the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), where he lived in isolated, confined spaces for 45 days. During the study, the Etihad Airways pilot performed simulated Mars walks and maintained contact with the control centre in Houston. The purpose of the study was to understand the impact of isolation on the performance and mental health of crew members.
The crew members had to follow strict schedules and perform various activities while being confined to the isolated environment. Al Romaithi mentioned that he was proud to represent the UAE on an international platform and hoped that his participation in the UAE Analog Programme would motivate Emirati youth. Out of the 18 studies conducted in the programme, 6 were carried out by UAE universities, demonstrating the country’s commitment to space exploration and research.
As the only pilot in the study, Al Romaithi stated that the inclusion of a pilot in the Mars Analog study was a strategic move by MBRSC. He emphasized that the collaboration with NASA not only enhances UAE’s position in terms of cooperation with international space agencies but also creates opportunities to share technologies and resources for further development of the UAE’s space sector.
