Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, recently delivered a speech condemning politicians who blame Ukraine for the war with Russia. She emphasized that peace should not mean surrender, and sovereignty should not mean occupation. Von der Leyen called out leaders who are muddling the conversation about Ukraine by blaming the victim instead of the aggressor. She specifically targeted Viktor Orbán, the Prime Minister of Hungary, who has been hesitant to provide military aid to Ukraine and has engaged in talks with Putin without a clear mandate from the EU.

Von der Leyen’s speech highlighted the need for a united stance in supporting Ukraine’s quest for freedom and integration into the European Union. She criticized those who oppose military supplies to Kyiv, labeling their stance as advocating for appeasement and subjugation instead of peace. The President urged for a systematic overhaul of the EU’s defence policy and emphasized the importance of ramping up the bloc’s defence capabilities in response to the changing geopolitical landscape.

The speech also underscored the need for increased investment in the EU’s defence industries and for promoting homegrown high-end technology for military purposes. Von der Leyen’s guidelines for her second term prioritize strengthening the EU’s cyber-defence capabilities and enhancing sanctions against hybrid attacks. She proposed appointing a dedicated Commissioner for Defence, although the extent of this new office’s power remains uncertain due to the limitations set by the EU treaties.

As a strong supporter of the transatlantic alliance, von der Leyen acknowledged the crucial role of the United States in supporting Ukraine. She expressed gratitude for America’s assistance and emphasized Europe’s responsibility in ensuring its own security. The President warned about the potential repercussions if Washington were to reduce its support for Ukraine, underscoring the need for Europe to take the lead in protecting its interests.

In conclusion, Ursula von der Leyen’s speech at the GLOBSEC Forum in Prague served as a sharp rebuke to leaders who fail to support Ukraine in its quest for freedom and integration with the EU. She called for unity among European nations in standing up to aggression and promoting peace through strength. The President outlined a series of proposals to bolster the EU’s defence capabilities and urged for a concerted effort to ensure Europe’s security in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions. Ultimately, von der Leyen’s message emphasized the importance of solidarity and resilience in confronting challenges to the European project.
