Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat recently returned to India after a bittersweet campaign at the Paris Olympics. Despite becoming the first Indian women’s wrestler to reach an Olympic final, Phogat was disqualified for breaching the weight limit. Following her return, she received a warm welcome in her hometown of Imlota village in Bhiwani, Haryana, with thousands of people gathering to greet her.

After a roadshow in Jhajjar and Sonipat districts, Vinesh Phogat was accompanied by close friends and loved ones on her journey back home. Despite not winning a medal at the Olympics, the excited crowd welcomed her with cheers and admiration, treating her as if she had won a medal. People flocked in thousands to catch a glimpse of the celebrated athlete, eager to take photos and selfies with her, expressing their support and appreciation.

Phogat’s emotional return to India was marked by a rousing reception at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi National Airport. Overwhelmed by the support and love from fans, Phogat broke down in tears during the reception, where fellow Olympic medal-winning wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia also greeted her. Despite her disqualification from the final match, Phogat’s achievements and contributions to Indian wrestling were acknowledged and celebrated by her fans and the wrestling community.

Following her disqualification at the Olympics and a failed appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for the silver medal, Vinesh Phogat also announced her retirement from wrestling. Before her disqualification, Phogat had reached the gold medal match by defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals with a dominant performance. Phogat was also known for her leadership in the Indian wrestlers’ protest against alleged sexual harassment incidents against female athletes, showcasing her strength and determination on and off the mat.

Phogat’s Paris Olympics journey began with a stunning victory over Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the round of 16, marking one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. Susaki, a three-time world champion and defending champion in the 50 kg freestyle category, suffered her first defeat in an illustrious career at the hands of Phogat. Despite the challenges and setbacks faced during the Olympics, Phogat’s determination and resilience shone through, leaving a lasting impact on the wrestling community and her supporters.

In conclusion, Vinesh Phogat’s emotional return to India after the Paris Olympics highlighted her remarkable achievements and contributions to Indian wrestling. Despite the disappointment of her disqualification, Phogat’s journey and accomplishments at the Olympics were celebrated by fans and fellow wrestlers. Her decision to retire from wrestling marked the end of a successful career and paved the way for new opportunities and challenges. Vinesh Phogat’s legacy as a trailblazer in women’s wrestling and her resilience in the face of adversity will continue to inspire future generations of Indian athletes.
