On a tragic day in Serbia, a collapse at a railway station in Novi Sad has left the nation mourning. The incident, which resulted in the death of 14 individuals, has prompted Prime Minister Miloš Vučević to declare Saturday as a national day of mourning. At a vigil held in northern Serbia, the gravity of the situation was felt as the general manager of the Novi Sad hospital reported that at least three people were in critical condition, with two undergoing life-threatening surgeries. As rescue teams work tirelessly to clear away the rubble, fears of a rising death toll linger.

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić expressed his concerns regarding the unfolding situation, labeling it as a “huge accident.” Despite the prompt reaction of emergency responders, the number of casualties overwhelmed the resources available. President Aleksandar Vučić extended his condolences to the victims’ families, acknowledging the outpouring of support from the Serbian community. The tragedy has shed light on the importance of unity and assistance in times of crisis, with many individuals contributing through blood donations and rescue efforts.

The accident occurred at 11:50 am, catching many by surprise. The construction above the station entrance, which collapsed, was not part of recent reconstruction efforts on the station building. While initial reports suggest that the roof was built in 1964, investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident and hold those responsible accountable. Despite conflicting statements regarding the building permit and renovation work, Serbian experts believe that structural changes resulting from the reconstruction may have contributed to the roof’s collapse.

Prime Minister Miloš Vučević emphasized the severity of the situation, labeling it as a “black Friday” for Serbia. As the nation grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy, questions regarding building safety and oversight have come to the forefront. The decision to declare a day of mourning underscores the magnitude of the loss and serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring infrastructure integrity. The sentiment of shock and disbelief is shared by locals, such as Novi Sad resident Ivan Trifunović, who expressed his concerns over the catastrophic event that unfolded at a familiar location.

In times of tragedy, communities come together to offer support and solace to those affected. The solidarity displayed by the Serbian people in the wake of the railway station collapse in Novi Sad highlights the resilience and compassion that define the nation. As the investigation into the incident continues, it is crucial to prioritize safety measures and regulatory compliance to prevent similar accidents in the future. The unity demonstrated during this challenging time serves as a reminder of the strength that can emerge from adversity, uniting individuals in a common cause of healing and recovery.
