The Venice Film Festival is set to kick off this week with stars like Lady Gaga, Daniel Craig, and Brad Pitt gracing the red carpet. After a year of Hollywood strikes that kept most studio films away, the festival is back with a lineup of 21 films competing for the Golden Lion prize. The much-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, will open the festival with original cast members Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, and Winona Ryder.

High-profile contenders in the main competition include Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie a Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, and Queer from Italy’s Luca Guadagnino starring Daniel Craig. Other notable films include Maria, a biopic of Maria Callas starring Angelina Jolie, and Babygirl, a thriller with Nicole Kidman and Antonio Banderas. The festival will also feature the premiere of Wolfs starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney.

The festival’s opening night will see the introduction of the international jury led by French actress Isabelle Huppert and the awarding of an honorary Golden Lion to Sigourney Weaver. Other films premiering at the festival include Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga and The Room Next Door from Pedro Almodovar. The festival runs until September 7 and is known for showcasing films that go on to Oscar glory.

Unlike the rival Cannes Film Festival, Venice accepts films produced by streaming services, particularly Netflix. This year, Apple TV+ is making a splash with films like Wolfs and a thriller series called Disclaimer starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Kline, and Sacha Baron Cohen. The festival has become a platform for launching successful films and has seen previous winners like Poor Things, Nomadland, and Joker go on to win Oscars.

Overall, the Venice Film Festival promises a star-studded affair with top Hollywood talent, intriguing film selections, and a chance to showcase some of the best in the industry. With a mix of premieres, screenings, and awards, the festival is set to captivate audiences and continue its tradition of excellence in the world of cinema. The blend of international films, Hollywood glamour, and talented actors ensures that the Venice Film Festival remains a standout event in the industry calendar.
