NAJRAN – The Uruq Bani Ma’arid Protected Area in the Najran region of Saudi Arabia has been officially recognized for its conservation efforts, achieving both a listing on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Green List and inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The dual recognition, confirmed this week, highlights the Kingdom’s growing commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable tourism. This achievement positions the area as a globally significant landscape for biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Prince Jalawi bin Abdulaziz bin Musaed, Emir of Najran, received the official certificates confirming the listings during a ceremony held on Wednesday. Representatives from the National Center for Wildlife, led by CEO Dr. Mohammed Qurban, presented the documentation, marking a milestone for the region and the nation. The event underscored the collaborative effort required to meet the stringent criteria of both international bodies.

Uruq Bani Ma’arid: A Triumph for Saudi Arabia’s Conservation Efforts

The recognition of the Uruq Bani Ma’arid Protected Area is a significant step forward for Saudi Arabia’s environmental initiatives. The IUCN Green List is a globally recognized benchmark for protected and conserved areas, signifying successful conservation and positive impacts on nature and people. UNESCO World Heritage status further elevates the area’s importance, acknowledging its outstanding universal value.

According to the National Center for Wildlife, the Uruq Bani Ma’arid area was selected due to its unique ecological features and successful conservation management practices. The protected area encompasses a diverse range of habitats, including sand dunes, gravel plains, and volcanic mountains, supporting a variety of plant and animal life. This includes several species of conservation concern, making its preservation particularly crucial.

Meeting International Standards

Achieving both designations required a comprehensive assessment of the area’s conservation effectiveness. The IUCN Green List evaluation focuses on factors like protected area management, design, and the delivery of conservation outcomes. UNESCO World Heritage inscription demands demonstration of outstanding universal value based on natural or cultural criteria.

The National Center for Wildlife has been actively working to enhance the management of protected areas across the Kingdom, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. This vision prioritizes environmental sustainability and aims to diversify the national economy through initiatives like eco-tourism. The Uruq Bani Ma’arid listing is a tangible result of these efforts.

The region’s biodiversity is a key component of its appeal. The Uruq Bani Ma’arid area is home to the Arabian oryx, a species that was once extinct in the wild but has been successfully reintroduced through dedicated conservation programs. Additionally, the area provides habitat for various other mammals, birds, and reptiles, contributing to its ecological richness.

Prince Jalawi praised the National Center for Wildlife’s dedication, stating the achievement reflects the Kingdom’s qualitative progress in environmental protection. He emphasized the importance of adhering to international standards in natural resource management and its contribution to improving Saudi Arabia’s global environmental standing. The Emir also highlighted the potential for sustainable development within the region.

The inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List is expected to boost tourism to the Najran region. However, the National Center for Wildlife has stressed the need for responsible tourism practices to minimize environmental impact and ensure the long-term preservation of the area’s natural and cultural heritage. Careful planning and visitor management will be essential.

The process of securing these listings involved extensive collaboration between the National Center for Wildlife, local communities, and international experts. This collaborative approach is considered a model for future conservation initiatives in Saudi Arabia. It demonstrates a commitment to inclusive and participatory conservation strategies.

The Uruq Bani Ma’arid Protected Area is not the only region in Saudi Arabia undergoing significant conservation efforts. The Kingdom has been actively investing in the establishment and management of protected areas, aiming to safeguard its unique biodiversity and natural landscapes. This includes initiatives focused on marine conservation, desert restoration, and the protection of endangered species.

Looking ahead, the National Center for Wildlife will continue to monitor and manage the Uruq Bani Ma’arid Protected Area to ensure it maintains the high standards required for both the IUCN Green List and UNESCO World Heritage status. Regular assessments and adaptive management strategies will be crucial for addressing emerging challenges and maximizing conservation outcomes. The center is also expected to share its experiences and best practices with other conservation organizations in the region and beyond.

The long-term success of the Uruq Bani Ma’arid’s protected status will depend on sustained funding, effective enforcement of conservation regulations, and continued engagement with local communities. The report indicates that ongoing research and monitoring programs will be vital for understanding the area’s ecological dynamics and informing future management decisions. The next major review by UNESCO is anticipated within ten years, requiring continued demonstration of the area’s outstanding universal value.
