Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has called time on his international career after 17 years with the national team, where he emerged as their all-time leading goalscorer with 69 goals. The 37-year-old made his debut in 2007 and played a crucial role in Uruguay’s run to the semifinals of the 2010 World Cup and their victory at the Copa America in 2011.

In an emotional press conference, Suarez announced that Friday’s match against Paraguay will be his final game for Uruguay. He expressed gratitude for being able to retire on his own terms and mentioned that he is not stepping away due to injuries or being overlooked for selection. Suarez believes that he has given his all for the team until the end of his career.

Suarez’s last-gasp goal against Canada in the Copa America secured Uruguay’s third-place finish in July. He revealed that one of his motivations was to show that he could still contribute to the national team. Despite winning numerous titles at club level, Suarez’s dream was for his children to witness him winning something significant with the national team.

The striker decided that leaving on a high note after the Copa America would have been an option, but he chose to retire in front of his home crowd at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo. Suarez wanted his children to experience his farewell with the fans and show his appreciation for their support throughout his international career.

Having recently joined Inter Miami in the MLS, Suarez has confirmed that it will be his last club before retiring altogether. The move reunites him with former Barcelona teammates Messi, Busquets, and Alba. Suarez’s decision to retire from international football reflects his desire to end his career on a high note and leave a lasting legacy with the national team.

Suarez’s impact on Uruguayan football has been immense, and his contributions to the national team have been crucial in their success over the years. As he prepares to play his final match for Uruguay, fans and teammates will bid farewell to a legendary striker who has left an indelible mark on the world of football. Suarez’s retirement marks the end of an era for Uruguay, but his legacy will endure for years to come.
