Kuwait is making significant strides in its fight against corruption, earning international recognition for its commitment to integrity and transparency. Recent praise from Emma Morley, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative in Kuwait, highlights the nation’s progress under the “Kuwait Strategy for Enhancing Integrity and Combating Corruption 2019-2025” and its dedication to good governance. This positive momentum was underscored at the fifth annual forum of the Kuwait Anti-Corruption Authority (Nazaha), held in observance of International Anti-Corruption Day.

Kuwait’s Advancements in Combating Corruption

Morley’s remarks at the Nazaha forum emphasized the tangible results of Kuwait’s anti-corruption efforts. She specifically noted improvements in international governance and transparency indicators, attributing these advancements to the unwavering dedication of Kuwaiti institutions and the active participation of its citizens. This collaborative approach is proving crucial in building a more accountable and ethical society.

The UNDP’s support for Nazaha in developing the next national anti-corruption strategy demonstrates a continued commitment to fostering these positive changes. This strategy aims to translate Kuwait’s aspirations for a transparent future into concrete actions, embedding transparency at the core of its development process.

A Consultative Strategy Formulation

The upcoming national strategy isn’t being crafted in isolation. It’s the product of a comprehensive consultative process, actively involving a diverse range of stakeholders. These include government institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations, academic institutions, and the media. This broad participation ensures the strategy is well-rounded, addresses key vulnerabilities, and enjoys widespread support.

Nazaha’s Role and Achievements

The Nazaha forum, themed “Strategies for Combating Corruption: From Evaluating Achievements to Building the Future,” served as a platform to showcase Kuwait’s dedication to tackling corruption. Chairman Abdulaziz Al-Ibrahim reaffirmed Kuwait’s strong commitment to not only combating corruption but also to raising public awareness and implementing preventative measures.

Nazaha’s success is evident in its collaborative efforts. The authority actively cooperates with other anti-corruption bodies, civil society, international organizations, and counterparts in friendly nations. This network of partnerships strengthens Kuwait’s ability to address corruption effectively.

Furthermore, Nazaha was recently honored with the Arab Government Excellence Award in the category of Best Government Development Initiative, a testament to its impactful work and innovative approach. This recognition further validates Kuwait’s commitment to integrity on a regional level.

The Importance of Transparency and Sustainable Development

Morley rightly pointed out that enhancing transparency isn’t merely a matter of good governance; it’s a vital investment in Kuwait’s future. A transparent system fosters a resilient, diversified, and prosperous economy, aligning perfectly with the goals outlined in Kuwait Vision 2035. This long-term vision prioritizes sustainable development and economic diversification, both of which are heavily reliant on a strong foundation of good governance.

Combating corruption, she stressed, requires a collective effort and a shared commitment that extends beyond any single institution. It demands the active involvement of all segments of society, working together to create a culture of accountability and ethical conduct. This holistic approach is essential for achieving lasting results.

Strengthening Public-Private Partnerships

The forum highlighted the crucial role of the private sector in promoting integrity. Encouraging businesses to adopt robust compliance standards, enhance transparency in their operations, and cultivate a culture of ethics within their organizations is paramount. This includes implementing clear codes of conduct and providing training programs for employees.

The integrated approach advocated at the forum emphasizes the synergy between the public and private sectors, as well as the broader community. By working together, these entities can create a more robust and effective system for preventing and addressing corruption.

Looking Ahead: Building a Future of Integrity

Participants at the forum expressed their appreciation for Kuwait’s determination to continue its reform efforts and strengthen its governance structures. The transition to a new strategic framework, based on stronger partnerships, advanced legislation, and an empowered, informed society, signals a promising future for Kuwait.

Nazaha’s ongoing monitoring of the current National Integrity Strategy has yielded impressive results, with over 90% of its goals achieved this year. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the strategy and the authority’s commitment to delivering on its promises. The preparation for the next national strategy, with continued broad participation, underscores Kuwait’s unwavering dedication to eradicating the root causes of corruption.

In conclusion, Kuwait’s progress in combating corruption is commendable and serves as a model for other nations in the region. The collaborative efforts of Nazaha, the UNDP, and various stakeholders, coupled with a strong commitment to transparency and good governance, are laying the foundation for a more sustainable and prosperous future, firmly aligned with Kuwait Vision 2035. Continued dedication and collective action will be vital to building on these achievements and ensuring a future free from the detrimental effects of corruption.
