The Met Gala, a renowned event in the fashion world, is known for its strict rules and exclusivity. E! News recently interviewed Met curator Andrew Bolton, who shared insights into what could lead to a celebrity’s exclusion from future galas. According to Bolton, smoking and touching the artwork are prohibited, citing past incidents where stars flouted these rules. Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor-in-chief, also emphasized the importance of reflecting the cultural moment in the guest list, which is carefully curated each year.

Securing an invitation to the Met Gala comes with a hefty price tag, with solo tickets costing $30,000 and tables at $275,000. However, not everyone has to pay their way in, as Wintour often extends invitations to up-and-coming designers and celebrities showcasing designers’ work. The event’s exclusivity extends beyond its price tag, with attendee numbers typically capped at 500 to maintain an intimate atmosphere. Meticulous planning begins immediately after the previous gala, with approximately 100 people working year-round to orchestrate the event.

Entertainment plays a crucial role at the Met Gala, with high-profile performers adding to the event’s allure. However, booking such acts often entails navigating significant budgetary hurdles. Security measures are paramount, especially for the valuable jewellery adorning attendees. The event’s security protocols ensure the safety of priceless pieces and guests alike. Despite its opulent facade, the Met Gala is not immune to controversy, with guests required to adhere to a strict no-selfie policy.

The 2021 gala saw stringent health protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including mandatory face masks and proof of vaccination. Despite these measures, controversies arose, such as rapper Nicki Minaj’s decision to opt-out due to vaccination concerns. The Met Gala remains an enigmatic affair, steeped in tradition and exclusivity, where rules and protocols play a crucial role in securing coveted invites in the future. The 2024 Met Gala was held on May 6, celebrating the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,’ with an official dress theme of ‘The Garden of Time.’
