Qatar’s approach to international mediation emphasized

Minister of State H E Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands H E Hanke Bruins in Amsterdam to discuss cooperation between the two countries and the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Amsterdam Dialogue Forum 2024, where Al Khulaifi participated in the opening session. During the session, he spoke about the State of Qatar’s strategy in international mediation and highlighted Qatar’s role in promoting peace and stability globally. He emphasized Qatar’s commitment to dialogue as the most effective means of resolving disputes and noted that mediation is the second most widely used peaceful method for resolving conflicts after direct negotiations.

Al Khulaifi pointed out that small countries like Qatar can have a significant influence in promoting peace and stability in the global arena. He mentioned that Qatar represents a model for such countries by tirelessly calling for dialogue and reconciliation in deep-rooted conflicts around the world. He also highlighted that Qatar’s mediation practice allows it to navigate through diverse geopolitical environments with skill and impartiality, whether in the Gulf region, the greater Middle East, or beyond. The State of Qatar has shown a remarkable ability to bridge divisions and facilitate constructive dialogue between conflicting parties.

The Minister of State stressed that Qatar’s mediation approach is guided by a firm commitment to dialogue as the most effective means of resolving disputes, in accordance with international law. While international law obligates states to resolve their disputes and differences peacefully, it does not specify a particular mechanism, allowing states to choose between diplomatic or judicial means. Al Khulaifi noted that statistics show mediation as the second most widely used peaceful method for resolving disputes, following direct negotiations. He highlighted Qatar’s success in mediation, attributing it to the country’s dedication to promoting peace and stability globally.

During the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Al Khulaifi and Bruins discussed cooperation between their countries and the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and occupied Palestinian territories. The two ministers emphasized the importance of dialogue and reconciliation in resolving conflicts and promoting peace.
