The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, recently expressed his gratitude towards His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for the strong partnership between Oman and the UN. He praised Oman’s role as a “peace builder” in the region and described the country as a “voice of wisdom” and an “indispensable partner” respected by all. Guterres highlighted Oman’s efforts in de-escalating tensions in the region and promoting regional security through dialogue and peace agreements.

Guterres emphasized the importance of the existing cooperation between Oman and the UN, as well as Oman’s support for UN efforts and its unique role in creating conditions for dialogue and peace agreements in the region. He also addressed the current situation in Gaza, expressing sorrow for the high number of civilian casualties and urging countries with influence on Israel to open all crossing points for humanitarian aid. He called for an immediate and humanitarian cessation of military operations in Gaza to end the suffering of civilians and emphasized the importance of achieving a two-state solution and granting Palestine full sovereignty over its lands.

The Secretary General also discussed the challenges facing the United Nations in granting Palestine full membership, citing global divisions and geopolitical developments as major obstacles. As the UN was established after World War II in 1945, these challenges continue to impede progress towards achieving full membership for Palestine. Guterres underscored the need for international efforts to overcome these challenges and work towards a peaceful resolution in the region.

In conclusion, António Guterres praised Oman for its role in promoting peace and security in the region and reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting the people of Gaza during the current crisis. He called for immediate action to end the suffering of civilians and push for a two-state solution in Palestine. Guterres emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation between Oman and the UN in addressing regional issues and working towards a peaceful resolution in the Middle East.
