The United Nations has praised Qatar for its efforts as a mediator and sponsor of peace talks to resolve global disputes. UN Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions, H E Alexandre Zouev, commended Qatar as an important UN member state and highlighted the various initiatives being discussed between UN and Qatari officials. He also mentioned the collaboration between the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions and the Doha-based Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center (ROLACC), which the UN strongly supports. Zouev also praised the Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Anti-Corruption Excellence Award (ACE Award) as a significant initiative, noting his participation in award ceremonies in various countries.
Zouev further lauded Qatar’s mediation efforts in resolving conflicts, citing its contributions to negotiations surrounding the Darfur conflict in Sudan, the Afghan peace process, the Doha agreement in Lebanon, and the Djibouti-Eritrea border dispute. He expressed concerns about the situation in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon and Gaza, and highlighted the joint mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt, and the US to achieve a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized the importance of including international humanitarian law in all final documents of the upcoming UNGA meetings, with Qatar playing a crucial role in facilitating these agreements.
As the Summit of the Future 2024 approaches on September 22 – 23 at the UN Headquarters, Zouev mentioned that it will be a separate high-level event with the participation of numerous heads of state, heads of government, and ministers. He stressed the significance of Qatar’s involvement in assisting and facilitating the documents to be approved at the summit, including the Pact for the Future. Zouev expressed his optimism about the summit and the potential for positive outcomes with the participation of key leaders and officials from around the world.
In his interview with QNA, Zouev highlighted Qatar’s hosting of the Regional Anti-Corruption Center in Doha as a crucial initiative supported by the UN. He commended Qatar for its leadership in various peace negotiations and conflict resolutions, noting the positive impact of its mediation efforts in different regions. Zouev also mentioned the joint efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the US in mediating a cease-fire in Gaza, underscoring the importance of international humanitarian law in the resolution of conflicts.
