The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Bahrain and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recently hosted a technical mission from June 9 to 13 aimed at enhancing local public nurseries in Bahrain. The mission was in support of Bahrain’s National Afforestation Plan and aimed to boost community engagement towards urban greening in the Kingdom. The mission was led by Nursery Expert Dr. Mohamed Alnsour from WADI, a Jordan-based organization committed to ecological restoration through community engagement, outreach, and knowledge-sharing.

During the technical mission, Dr. Alnsour visited nurseries in various regions of Bahrain, including the Capital, Muharraq, and Southern and Northern Municipalities. He engaged with representatives from government entities, the private sector, and academia to assess nurseries’ production, cultivation methods, supply chains, and distribution strategies. Dr. Alnsour also held technical meetings with Municipalities to understand the management, challenges, and opportunities of nursery production systems, as well as the viability of planting indigenous trees.

The insights gathered during the mission will lead to strategic recommendations to enhance the supply chain system and identify effective contributions of public nurseries to the National Afforestation Plan. These findings will inform a comprehensive strategy and technical plan to optimize the use of public nurseries’ production and incentivize community engagement towards urban greening. The mission is part of UN-Habitat and FAO’s ongoing project with the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, “Building Greener and Sustainable Cities” which aims to strengthen capacities and improve the quality of selected green public spaces for Bahrainis.

The technical mission supported by UN-Habitat and FAO underscores the importance of enhancing local public nurseries in Bahrain’s efforts towards urban greening and biodiversity conservation. By engaging with various stakeholders and assessing nurseries’ production and cultivation methods, the mission aims to provide strategic recommendations to strengthen the supply chain system and optimize public nurseries’ contributions to the National Afforestation Plan. This initiative will not only improve Bahrain’s green spaces but also incentivize community participation in sustainable urban development.

The involvement of Nursery Expert Dr. Mohamed Alnsour from WADI, a Jordan-based organization specializing in ecological restoration, highlights the technical expertise and knowledge-sharing aspect of the mission. Dr. Alnsour’s interactions with government entities, the private sector, and academia, along with his visits to nurseries in different regions of Bahrain, demonstrate a comprehensive approach to assessing and improving nurseries’ production and distribution strategies. The mission’s aim to enhance community engagement towards urban greening aligns with the broader goals of UN-Habitat and FAO’s project to build greener and sustainable cities in Bahrain.

Overall, the technical mission hosted by UN-Habitat and FAO in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture represents a significant step towards enhancing Bahrain’s efforts in urban greening and biodiversity conservation. The strategic recommendations and technical plan developed as a result of the mission will not only optimize the use of public nurseries’ production but also mobilize community engagement towards sustainable urban development. With a focus on strengthening capacities and improving the quality of green public spaces, this initiative will contribute to building greener and more sustainable cities for Bahrainis.
