Ukraine is mourning the loss of promising athletes like Stanislav Hulenkov, who was killed fighting against Russia’s invasion. Hulenkov, a judo standout, had joined the border guard in 2021 to secure a stable job and continue his athletic career, but he disappeared on a battlefield and was identified months later. His story is one of many tragic tales of Ukrainian athletes whose dreams were shattered by the ongoing war.

Since early 2022, at least 488 Ukrainian athletes and trainers have been killed in the conflict, including European and world champions. Weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieshenko, a two-time European Champion, also lost his life in the war, leaving behind a legacy of sporting excellence. Many athletes, like Pielieshenko, joined the military to defend their country, putting their passion for sports on hold to fight on the front lines.

As the Summer Olympics open in Paris, Ukraine is sending a smaller delegation of 140 athletes and 95 coaches, as the country continues to face regular Russian air strikes that have devastated infrastructure and plunged cities into darkness. Athletes from Russia and Belarus, who are considered to be complicit in the invasion, are participating in the Games as neutrals, without displaying national symbols. Ukrainian athletes have been advised to avoid contact with competitors from these two countries.

Hulenkov’s legacy as a talented judoka who was on the cusp of a national team spot has left a void in the sports community. His dedication to his military duties and refusal to leave his comrades even as a major tournament approached is a testament to his selflessness and courage. Friends and teammates, like Vadym Chernov, continue to honor Hulenkov’s memory and carry his name tag to competitions, keeping his spirit alive in the world of judo.

The impact of the war on Ukraine’s sporting community is profound, as athletes who once aspired to represent their country on the global stage are now facing the harsh realities of conflict. Despite the challenges, Ukrainian athletes remain determined to compete and honor their fallen comrades. The sacrifices made by individuals like Hulenkov and Pielieshenko serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of war, and their legacies will forever be cherished in the hearts of those who knew and admired them.
