Belgium secured their place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a 0-0 draw against Ukraine. Despite the draw, all four teams in Group E finished level on four points. Romania claimed the top spot ahead of Belgium due to scoring more goals in the group. Slovakia also advanced to the next round as one of the four best third-placed teams.

The Belgium supporters reacted furiously at the final whistle as captain Kevin De Bruyne appeared to tell his team not to acknowledge them due to the loud jeers and whistles from the fans. The team will now face France in the next round, landing themselves on the tougher side of the draw which also includes hosts Germany, Spain, and Portugal.

Ukraine’s inspiring journey came to a heartbreaking end as they became the first team in the history of the tournament to not progress with four points. This was the first time in the European Championship that all four teams in the same group went into the final round of games with the same number of points.

The match saw Belgium make a few changes, including Leandro Trossard replacing the suspended Dodi Lukebakio. Ukraine was missing key players due to injuries, opting to switch to three at the back for the game. Ukrainian fans displayed a banner honoring a 21-year-old soldier who died in battle, sending a powerful message about the impact of war on football fans.

Both teams had their chances during the match, with Romelu Lukaku missing a crucial opportunity for Belgium, while Yaremchuk tested the Belgium goalkeeper. The game ended in a stalemate, with neither team able to break the deadlock. Despite the Ukrainians’ best efforts, they couldn’t find the crucial goal they needed to advance, ultimately leading to their elimination.

In the end, Belgium secured their place in the last 16, setting up a challenging fixture against France in the next round. The match showcased the passion and determination of both teams, with Belgium edging out Ukraine to advance in the tournament. The fans were treated to an intense game of football, highlighting the competitive spirit of the Euro 2024 tournament.
