Returning UAE travellers should prepare for longer processing times at airports across the country as peak arrival volumes continue. Increased congestion is expected at immigration counters, baggage claim areas, and surrounding road networks, particularly during evening and nighttime arrival banks. Airports are experiencing a surge in passengers coinciding with the end of the winter holiday season and the upcoming school resumption, prompting authorities to advise travellers to plan ahead and utilize available resources to expedite their journey home.

What Returning Travellers Should Expect

Passengers flying back into the UAE can anticipate extended wait times at immigration and baggage claim, according to recent reports. This is especially true during peak arrival periods. At Sharjah International Airport, dedicated counters are available for UAE residents and GCC nationals to help streamline the process. Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi offers biometric immigration clearance for UAE nationals and residents, alongside dedicated lanes for families and visitors during busy times.

Immigration and Documentation

Travellers are strongly advised to ensure their passports, visas, and Emirates ID details are valid and readily accessible to avoid any delays at immigration. Those travelling with families or in large groups should allocate extra time to complete all necessary formalities. Road traffic around airports is also expected to be heavier than usual, so pre-booking transport or utilizing public transportation is recommended for a smoother journey.

How to Avoid Queues on Your Return Journey

While proactive steps are most effective before departure, Emirates is encouraging passengers returning to the UAE to carefully plan their onward travel arrangements. Utilizing public transport options, such as the Dubai Metro’s Red Line from Terminal 3 at DXB, can help bypass road congestion during peak hours. Similar public transport options are available at Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al Khaimah airports.

Sharjah Taxi operates 24/7 with clearly marked pick-up points outside the arrivals area. Additionally, airport express buses and Abu Dhabi public bus services connect the airports to the city center. 24/7 taxi services with regulated fares and ride-hailing services are also available at designated zones. Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority provides tourism counters offering maps, hotel information, and transportation guidance.

Families returning with excess luggage are advised to arrange pickups in advance, as car parks and pick-up zones are expected to be particularly busy. This proactive approach can help minimize potential delays and ensure a more efficient arrival experience.

Why Airports Are Busier Now

The current surge in travel volume coincides with the conclusion of the winter holiday season and the imminent reopening of schools, leading many UAE residents to return within a concentrated timeframe. Airlines are operating multiple arrival waves into the UAE during this period, which is contributing to congestion at immigration, baggage handling, and transport hubs. This increased demand is placing a strain on airport infrastructure and resources.

However, authorities are actively working to mitigate the impact of these increased passenger numbers. The implementation of biometric immigration systems and dedicated lanes for residents and families are examples of ongoing efforts to improve efficiency. The availability of comprehensive public transport networks also provides viable alternatives to private vehicles, helping to alleviate road congestion. The increased airport traffic is expected to remain elevated for the next week as the majority of travellers complete their journeys.

Looking ahead, airport authorities will continue to monitor passenger flow and adjust resources accordingly. The long-term impact of these peak travel periods will likely inform future infrastructure planning and operational strategies. Passengers are advised to stay updated on the latest travel advisories from airlines and airport authorities to ensure a smooth and efficient return to the UAE. The situation remains dynamic, and further adjustments may be necessary depending on evolving demand and operational conditions.
