Heat stress is not just a concern for outdoor workers but also for those working in air-conditioned offices. While physical effects of heat exposure are well-known, the impact on mental health is often overlooked. Extreme heat can lead to mental health issues such as irritability, depression, and aggression. Elevated temperatures have been linked to memory problems, reduced attention, and slower reaction times.

Dana Berri, a psychologist, highlighted the connection between heat and mental health, stating that disrupted sleep patterns due to heat stress can lead to increased levels of stress hormones. Heat stress occurs when the body absorbs more heat than it can disperse, leading to heat exhaustion. Proper hydration, cooling, and recognizing symptoms of heat stress are crucial to prevent its adverse effects on mental health and well-being.

Dr. Aida Al Suhaimi, a clinical psychologist, emphasized the importance of understanding and recognizing the symptoms of heat stress, which may vary from person to person. Some common symptoms include persistent tension, irritability, poor sleep, decreased motivation, and low mood. Heat stress can lead to difficulty concentrating, decreased work productivity, and trigger symptoms of depression and anxiety if not addressed properly.

To mitigate the effects of heat stress on mental health, experts recommend mindfulness and relaxation techniques, good sleep hygiene, a healthy diet, and staying hydrated. It is also important to stay flexible and explore different ways to manage stress during the summer months. Tips from health experts include staying hydrated, eating nutritious meals, practicing mindfulness, engaging in breathing exercises, using meditation, maintaining a consistent sleep routine, and avoiding prolonged exposure to high temperatures.

In conclusion, heat stress can have a significant impact on mental health, leading to various issues such as irritability, depression, and decreased productivity. It is crucial to recognize the symptoms of heat stress and take proactive measures to mitigate its effects through proper hydration, mindfulness techniques, and a healthy lifestyle. By staying informed and implementing strategies to cope with heat stress, individuals can protect their mental well-being during periods of extreme temperatures.
