UAE Summer: Is Drinking Too Much Water Hazardous? Learn How and Why – News

Staying properly hydrated is immensely important, especially during the summer months in the UAE. Not only does drinking water help regulate body temperature and prevent heat-related illnesses, but it also aids in overall health and wellbeing. However, it is crucial to strike a balance and avoid overconsumption of water. Excessive intake can lead to a condition called water intoxication or hyponatremia, which occurs when the sodium levels in one’s blood are abnormally low. This can cause cells, including those in the brain, to swell, leading to various health complications ranging from headaches and nausea to confusion, seizures, or coma in extreme cases.

Dr. Heidy Wagdy, a general practitioner at Medcare Medical Center, Al Furjan West, points out that healthy kidneys can only process a certain amount of water per hour. Consuming more than this recommended amount can overwhelm the kidneys and result in water intoxication. Some content creators, posing as ‘experts’, have been advising residents to drink as much water as possible, which is a dangerous recommendation. Instead, experts like Dr. Aditya Bhabhe, a consultant in Nephrology at NMC Royal Hospital in Sharjah, suggest that residents should limit their daily water intake to three to four litres and avoid consuming more than 1.5 litres per hour to prevent diluting electrolyte levels in the blood.

Dr. Khalid Shukri, a specialist in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine at Wealth Medcare Medical Center, recommends a daily intake of two litres of water during the summer, with adjustments for individuals engaging in strenuous outdoor activities. It is essential to drink water steadily throughout the day, responding to the body’s thirst cues. To maintain proper hydration, Dr. Wagdy offers some practical tips, such as drinking water regularly and not waiting until feeling thirsty, as well as incorporating water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables into the diet. Monitoring urine color can also serve as a simple indicator of hydration levels, as light-colored urine is a sign of proper hydration.

In addition to drinking water, it is crucial to balance electrolytes by including beverages or foods with electrolytes, especially during intense physical activities. While sports drinks can help with electrolyte replenishment, it is important to be mindful of their sugar content. Consuming water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges can also help boost hydration levels. By following these expert recommendations and maintaining a balanced approach to hydration, residents can stay healthy and hydrated during the hot summer months in the UAE.
