The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has recently signed an agreement with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) to provide essential humanitarian aid to Sudan and South Sudan, totaling US$7 million. This allocation includes US$6 million for Unicef’s operations in Sudan and US$1 million for its activities in South Sudan. The UAE’s commitment to addressing the severe humanitarian crises in these countries is further solidified through this agreement.

The conflict in Sudan has resulted in a dire situation for children, with approximately 13.6 million children in urgent need of assistance. The ongoing crisis has led to over six million people, more than half of whom are children, being displaced from their homes, making Sudan the center of the world’s largest child displacement crisis. The funds provided by the UAE will directly support Unicef’s efforts to ensure that children and women in both countries have access to primary healthcare, quality water, and education.

Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations affected by conflict, particularly children in Sudan and South Sudan. Through partnerships with organizations like Unicef, the UAE aims to provide life-saving assistance and essential services to those in need. The UAE has continually stood by the Sudanese people during times of crisis, as evidenced by its participation in humanitarian efforts and aid delivery.

The UAE has a long-standing history of providing aid to Sudan, totaling over US$3.5 billion in the past decade. Since the conflict broke out in 2023, the UAE has contributed US$230 million in humanitarian aid and dispatched multiple relief flights carrying food, medical supplies, and relief items. The construction of two field hospitals in Chad has enabled medical treatment for thousands of individuals. Additionally, the UAE supports calls for an immediate ceasefire and peaceful resolution to the conflict through dialogue.

The UAE emphasizes the importance of finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Sudan and South Sudan, highlighting that there is no military resolution to the crisis. The country advocates for engagement with all stakeholders and supports processes that aim to establish a political path towards a lasting settlement. The UAE’s stance includes promoting civilian participation and leadership in forming a government to achieve national consensus and stability in the region.

In conclusion, the UAE’s recent agreement with Unicef to provide US$7 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan and South Sudan underscores the country’s dedication to supporting vulnerable populations affected by conflict. Through ongoing partnerships and engagement with international organizations, the UAE continues to provide crucial assistance to those in need. The country’s efforts aim to alleviate the humanitarian crises in Sudan and South Sudan, while advocating for peaceful resolutions to conflicts and promoting stability in the region.
