In the scorching summer heat of the UAE, with temperatures often exceeding 45°C, residents are calling for better treatment of delivery riders. Incidents of mistreatment and inadequate facilities have sparked a sense of empathy and compassion towards these essential workers among residents. Hassan Al Zahir, a UAE national, witnessed a restaurant waiter instructing delivery riders to wait outside without a valid reason, prompting him to advocate for more compassion from restaurants and establishments. Similarly, American expat Emma John recounted an incident where a tired rider was denied basic amenities while waiting for an order, highlighting the need for more respect towards these workers. Residents are urging restaurants and institutions to understand the vital role delivery riders play in their businesses and treat them with humanity.

Indian expat Mohamed Salim shared his disappointment after encountering a similar scene in his local supermarket, where delivery riders were not allowed to wait inside. He emphasized the importance of providing these hardworking individuals with a comfortable space to rest, especially during the extreme summer heat. Two delivery riders also shared their experiences, noting that while some establishments show kindness by offering snacks, others can be rude. They highlighted the impact that even small gestures of kindness, such as providing a cool place to rest, can have on their well-being.

Residents have taken to social media to share acts of kindness towards delivery riders, leaving cold water and treats outside their homes for the workers to enjoy. Online discussions have also sparked innovative suggestions, such as adding a surcharge for deliveries during peak hours to compensate riders for enduring the intense heat. In response to these concerns, delivery platform Deliveroo has introduced the “Respect Pledge” initiative in the UAE, aimed at improving the treatment of delivery riders and enhancing the delivery ecosystem in the country.

Anis Harb, General Manager of Deliveroo Middle East, outlined the key principles of the Respect Pledge, which include treating everyone with respect, promoting professionalism, ensuring open communication, facilitating access to facilities, and striving for operational excellence. The initiative is motivated by a commitment to improving rider welfare, particularly during the challenging summer months. Nearly 40 establishments have signed up for the initiative, with plans to expand it across the industry. Steve Flawith, Founder and CEO of Yolk Brands, expressed support for the initiative and highlighted proactive efforts in providing dedicated rest areas with amenities for riders at all Pickl stores.

Residents and establishments are coming together to advocate for better treatment of delivery riders in the UAE. With calls for compassion and empathy towards these essential workers, initiatives like the Respect Pledge by Deliveroo aim to improve rider welfare and strengthen the delivery ecosystem in the country. By acknowledging the valuable contribution of delivery riders and providing them with the respect and support they deserve, the community is working towards creating a more inclusive and compassionate environment for all.
