In the UAE, driving below the minimum speed limit is a serious offense that can result in fines and contribute to accidents. Last year alone, over 300,000 motorists were fined for driving too slowly on the roads. The Ministry of Interior reports that this slow driving has led to various accidents, highlighting the importance of adhering to speed limits.

Under federal traffic law, a fine of Dh400 is imposed for driving below the minimum speed limit and failing to give way to faster vehicles. It is essential for drivers to prioritize vehicles coming from behind or using the overtaking lane. The right lanes are designated for slower vehicles, while the left lanes are reserved for faster vehicles and those looking to overtake.

Abu Dhabi has taken steps to address this issue by implementing a minimum speed limit of 120kph on the first two lanes of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road in both directions. This measure aims to prevent accidents and improve the flow of traffic on this major highway. It is important for drivers to adhere to these speed limits to ensure safety on the roads.

The maximum speed allowed on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road is 140kph, with the minimum speed limit of 120kph applicable to the first and second lanes from the left. Vehicles traveling at a slower pace are advised to use the third lane, where no minimum speed is specified. Heavy vehicles should always use the last lane, which is not covered by the minimum speed rule.

In addition to driving below the minimum speed limit, tailgating is also considered an offense in the UAE. Tailgating involves not maintaining a sufficient distance between vehicles and can result in accidents. Drivers who engage in tailgating may face fines of Dh400 and will be penalized for not keeping a safe distance from other vehicles on the road.

To address tailgating, Abu Dhabi has introduced radar systems that can detect and fine drivers who are not maintaining a safe distance. If vehicles are caught tailgating, both the vehicle in front and at the back may be fined, with the vehicle at the back receiving four black points in addition to the fine. It is crucial for drivers to follow the rules and regulations to ensure road safety for themselves and others.
