In a field where Emirati women are not commonly seen, Jawaher Al Mahri, a 24-year-old nurse, is breaking stereotypes and setting new standards. Graduating from Fatima College of Health Sciences, she pursued a nursing career driven by her late father’s encouragement and her passion for the profession. Despite societal expectations, she persevered and followed her dreams.

Traditionally, nursing was not considered a career path for Emirati women, but times are changing. Initiatives such as the “Nafis” National Healthcare Programme by the UAE government are promoting nursing as a viable and respected profession. This program offers scholarships and training opportunities, highlighting the essential role nurses play, especially during times like the Covid-19 pandemic.

Jawaher faced challenges during her studies but did not give up. After graduation, she became the second Emirati woman to join the nursing team at Medcare Hospital. Despite initial perceptions of being different as an Emirati woman in nursing, Jawaher’s dedication and hard work have earned her respect among her colleagues. Her passion for nursing remains strong, and she is considering further studies in nursing or transitioning to medicine to become a doctor in the future.

The post-Covid era marked a turning point in society’s perception of nurses, acknowledging their vital contributions and heroism. Jawaher’s story is a testament to how determination and support can reshape career paths, inspiring future generations of Emirati women to pursue their dreams. Her father, who was one of her strongest supporters, played a significant role in her decision to enter the nursing field despite initial reservations.

Jawaher’s journey reflects the changing landscape of women in healthcare in the UAE. With more women like her breaking stereotypes and excelling in traditionally male-dominated fields, the future looks bright for Emirati women in nursing and medicine. Jawaher’s story serves as a powerful example of how perseverance and passion can overcome societal barriers and pave the way for a new generation of women leaders in healthcare.
