A Dragon Called Blue is a children’s book by Emirati author Ebtisam Al-Beiti that tells the story of a blue dragon named Blue who finds a brown egg in her den. As the egg changes colors and goes missing, Blue must embark on a journey to find it. The book explores themes of identity, change, and acceptance, and is set in a world that mirrors our own, where joy and sadness coexist. Ebtisam’s work has gained recognition, and she is set to attend the Bradford Literature Festival, bringing attention to Emirati writers and children’s literature.

The Emirates has seen a rise in Arab children’s authors, thanks to initiatives promoting reading and literature. Ebtisam, a former early years teacher, transitioned to writing during the pandemic, using her background in education to create engaging and relatable stories for young readers. Her latest book, A Dragon Called Blue, was inspired by a visit to Scotland and the phenomenon of the Northern Lights, exploring the theme of waiting and emotions in a changing world.

Ebtisam’s stories also touch on important issues such as the environment, aiming to introduce children to these concepts in a way that is accessible and thought-provoking. Through her books, she hopes to spark curiosity and encourage young readers to think about their impact on the world around them. Ebtisam’s background in education helps her understand the needs and interests of children, making her stories engaging and educational at the same time.

Children’s literature is a sensory experience, with illustrations playing a crucial role in engaging young readers. Ebtisam collaborates with illustrators Hanna Augustine and Timotius A. Gracious, who bring her stories to life visually. Finding the right illustrator is essential to creating a cohesive and immersive world for children to explore. Ebtisam’s dedication to providing a holistic reading experience ensures that her books resonate with young audiences.

As Ebtisam prepares to participate in the Bradford Literature Festival, she reflects on her journey from teacher to full-time author. Representing her country and sharing Emirati stories on an international platform is a source of pride for Ebtisam. Through her work, she continues to educate and inspire children, bridging cultures and fostering a love for reading and literature. Ebtisam’s passion for storytelling and commitment to children’s education shine through in her books, making her a valuable voice in the world of children’s literature.
