Schoolchildren are waking up early to avoid traffic and reach school on time, resulting in sleep deprivation, impacting their physical and mental health, as well as academic performance. Dr. Sarah Rizk Beshara, a specialist paediatrician, emphasizes the importance of 8 to 9 hours of sleep for students to rest and recover. Sleep deprivation weakens the immune system, impairs growth and development, and can lead to fatigue and low energy levels. Lack of proper sleep also increases the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular diseases later in life.

Dr. Mazen Abou Chaaban, a consultant paediatrician, highlights the negative effects of insufficient sleep on students, including exhaustion, lack of concentration, irritability, and anxiety. This impacts their ability to interact with others, understand lessons, and participate in activities, affecting academic and social performance. Dr. Chaaban emphasizes the importance of prioritizing adequate sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, and reducing excessive homework in the early months of the school year. He also recommends reducing the weight of school bags to prevent physical exhaustion.

Both doctors suggest staggered entry times for schools to allow students more time for sleep and energy in school. They also recommend encouraging proper sleep hygiene, such as regular sleep schedules, limiting screen time before bed, and creating a conducive sleep environment. Taking care of students’ mental health is crucial for enhancing their performance and concentration, with parents, teachers, and school administrators playing a role in supporting these efforts to help students thrive academically and personally.

In conclusion, addressing the issue of sleep deprivation in schoolchildren requires a multi-faceted approach, including raising awareness about the importance of adequate sleep, implementing strategies to improve sleep hygiene, and reducing factors that contribute to exhaustion. By prioritizing sleep and mental health, students can experience improved academic performance, better physical and mental well-being, and overall success in their educational journey.Parents, teachers, and school administrators must collaborate to create a supportive environment that fosters healthy sleeping habits and overall well-being for students.
